True Ultra High Speed - Crappy Thomson Wifi Modem

Has anyone got True's Ultra HighSpeed (DOCSIS Cable) and sucessfully replaced the crappy Thomson modem with something else?

If so what did you replace it with and where did you get it.

Ideally I am trying to loose all the true kit and get direct into my VPN router so I can establish Site to Site VPN tunnels.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You can either turn your Thomson Wifi router to Full Bridge mode (Which I havent found any useful guide on this) Or you can request True to change to Motorola Cable Modem or Cisco EPC2325 like this thread:

I am lucky to have a Motorola Cable modem that come in bridge mode. Just need to plug in my router to use.

My crappy Thomson Wifi modem/router provided by True works great for my needs which is just blasting a Wifi signal throughout the house for 4 devices; better than the Motorola they first gave me which developed an upload problem at about the 9 month point. But regardless of DOCSIS modem in hand, DOCSIS modems provided are married to the True DOCSIS cable system by MAC code/serial number...you are not issued any User ID and/or Password like for an ADSL accouknt. You just can't swap-out a DOCSIS modem like a ADSL modem where you just enter your ADSL account User ID & Password from the old modem and generally go online with the new ADSL modem.

Can't you clone the MAC address of the old modem to the new one?

Assuming the MAC address is the only thing the DOCSIS is looking for I guess that should work....but a think the DOCSIS also looks for the serial number. However, on my Thomson model there is no setting/menu area to clone a MAC address like I use to see on my ADSL and DDWRT type routers. And I just quickly looked at the manual on my previous Cisco/Motorola DOCSIS modem/router and there was no setting to clone the MAC address. It had a statement in its manual (shown below) which implies to me both the MAC address and serial number are required to allow connection to a DOCSIS system....residential gateway is a fancy word for modem.

If you have an existing high-speed Internet access account, you must give your service provider the serial number and the MAC address of the residential gateway. Refer to the serial number and MAC address information listed previously in this section.
