It is going to be about half the distance to the moon away, will it be a good show form the LOS?

Typical article from RT. Better perspective here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_DA14

But seems it will be very close to earth. Could be a fantastic show.

From the Wiki article "The asteroid will not be visible to the naked eye".

Nothing to see unless the astronomers have it wrong and it hits us.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

No, it is not likely to be visible with the naked eye.

Geez. Did you not even read the link you posted.

It will be pretty much the closest asteroid to earth for a long time (at least according to this site). I didn't mean to imply it would be a fantastic show with the naked eye.

It may visible in the upper atmosphere, just as a VERY LAGER shooting star. Shooting stars are small meteroites that constantly bombard the earth every day. A 60 meter astroid could cause significant damage especially if it hit the sea. A Tsuinami would be created with huge displacement. It would make the Tsunami of 2004 look timid. If it hit land the result could be earthquakes, tremors and if it hit a population center, total death.

It'll be shouting obscenities in a Chang vest before falling unconscious in a pool of its own vomit?

Visible Comet Ison could outshine the moon starting in November into 2014. Comet Panstars will be visible in the Northern Hemisphere starting in March. Either of which at some point might be visible in daytime

Thanks for the info.

Ehm, in your comparison between RT and Wikipedia you favour the latter.. Can i ask why?

IMHO, Wiki "tries" to just lay out the facts. RT is an editorial. The article says scientists are going to "paint" or blast it to help divert this thing. Apparently, there's a very, very, very small chance it will impact the earth. Almost 0%. Sensationalist journalism. Here's the stats from NASA:

Impact Probability: 0.00033

0.033000000% chance of Earth impact

or

1 in 3,030 chance

or

99.96700000% chance the asteroid will miss the Earth

I like this source better:

RT is no different, IMHO, than many other websites out there...trying to get your attention with dramatic articles.

Again, this is just my opinion!!

only a matter of time before we get struck by a pebble the size of samui.. current knowledge puts asteroid (29075) 1950 DA, as having the highest known probability of impacting Earth in 867 years from now..

but who knows what's really lurking out there, undiscovered & approaching just beyond pluto or nearer? ...ph34r.png

Right on! It's happened before, it'll happen again. When's the big question.

IMHO RT belongs to the worlds top on journalism. Together with Al Jazeera and The guardian.

For instance RT have been a trusty supporter of Julian Assange and helped exposing the truth and the lies about him. Also thanks to RT Julian is still out there.thumbsup.gif

People forget wiki is also written by journalists and therefore has to be considered a newspaper(opinion-based). -This is not a bible. It is dangerous to blindly assume whatever is being written to be true.

Whenever a comet comes close my eyes will be pointed at the sky. And this time i will check this out again thank to your info.

Thanks for the info on that!thumbsup.gif

Well put! I remember having some issues with a wiki page last year. I'm mainly concerned with the RT financial reporter. Has some very good points, but goes off the deep end a bit too much. I love Al Jazeera also. Great reports on there.

I have a friend with a fairly large telescope. I'm trying to see if I can get access to it...depending on when it passes by....

I will view through an empty bottle of Chang I am sure it will look greatsmile.png

This financial reporter you are talking about is funny smart and cynical. I always like his ranting. Mr. Keiser, right?

Love that guy! He kinda reminds of Lewis Black but about the financial markets instead haha

99942 Apophis, the near-Earth asteroid that hit the headlines a couple of years ago, flies by the Earth this wednesday 9th Jan. Full story here

Nothing to fear though (yet) as it whips by at a distance of nearly 9 million miles from us.

However, the 2036 approach is still shrouded in uncertainty... it may strike Earth. unsure.png

lifted this "path of risk" possible impact map from it's own wiki page..
