Probably the closest readily available similar oily fish is plaa thuu (ปลาทู) - can get at virtually all supermarkets and markets. (Of course, that's the fresh version - not the dried version they also stock.)

These are the small mackerels, correct?

I got frozen herring at my local Makro two months ago

REAL herrings?

The price sounds more than reasonable for imported food.

Was that "filets", or the whole fish?

Some are small, but I was thinking of the ones about 30 cm long - but yes, a species of mackerel.

Incidentally, some local Japanese restaurants serve a lightly pickled version of plaa thuu as sushi. It works very well, so I guess it would take kindly to a more serious pickling of rollmops.

Yes, real herring, the fatter ones.

Hole fish, in bulk, no package.

I'm Scandinavian, so made pickled herring.

Please don't post pictures of 'rolmops' anymore, it makes me hungry ;-)

Bic C Samui (not sure about braches in less touristic area's) mostly has herrings. Look at the chilled section where they sell cheese, butter etc for the product range of 'Casino Brand'

They come in a box of 500 gr, are lightly smoked and concerved in oil (for the taste en texture, similar as 'maatjes' but due to the smoke a stronger taste). Delicious with a bit of onion. Price is a reasonable 300thb if I'm correct.

Will check Makro tomorrow and if I find them, I will try to make rolmops in mayonaise w00t.gif

If you live on Samui, all the herring in Samui was bought up by Swedish restaurant before Christmas.

Well almost all, I managed to get some.

I buy herring sometimes from my local Topps,, trouble is it's too late to make rollmops from them since they've already kippered them ,,,,,

We are talking about fresh/salted herrings/alternatives, to make our own Rollmops/Stip/zure hering etc....

NOT about a finished product in a glas...

Macro Pattaya didn't had them yesterday. (9.1)

Only Norwegian mackerels for 85Baht/kg

I have been living in LOS for 30 years ;o) I used to make Swedish marinated herring from a local fish called "Pla Gulae", really good, but the last years it is very small, 10 - 12 cm. 15 years ago they were 5 THB a kilo, now about 100, whole fresh fish. I'm told that the Makro Herring is not real herring, but a local fish. I have served marinated real herring alongside "Pla Gulae" marinated, and Scandinavians can't tell the difference.

Now living in Laos, no or very little seafood around, expensive as well :o(

Could you write the name of this "Pla Gulae" in Thai?

Funny, I recently found out that rollmops and a couple of other kinds of herrings are sold just 3 kms away from my house.

But as usual, it is wholesale, so you have to buy enough rollmops to open an rollmops restaurant. It's a Scandinavian brand I think, so probably it is a bit different as in Belgium and The Netherlands.

PS ; I'm a bit sadistic, so let's make my Belgian compatriots go nuts : they also sell 'vol au vent videekes', yummy ;-)

PM me for the name, they have a branch in Phuket and Samui
