Plus, if you opt for the via Bangkok route, you'll have to overnight in Bangkok now as the only AirAsia flight to Penang leaves early in the morning. Much better to do the connection in Kuala Lumpur even with the six hour layover at KLIA.

Maybe I just got lucky, but out of the 6-7 times I flew with them, they've never been delayed. Canceled once on Kota Kinabalu - BKK yes, but then it was a blessing since because of some last-minute boozing we had arrived at the airport too late for the flight anyway
