Popular Post thetefldon
Wasn't sure if this thread was dead??? Finished the year with 102 for garden patch. Had a nice find(well it found me) at the end of the year. Eastern Buzzard( Buteo Japonicus) stayed around the patch a few days. Also had a few close encounters with Black Baza up to 3 birds in the area.

AjarnNorth
Great Egret and Grey Heron, to be specific. Not to sound finicky, but most birders are finicky like that. 1

There were actually four of them playing in the bushes, i guess they were a family with big chicks! I only had 200 mm max zoom so couldn't get them closer although I cropped the picture! ; ) Plahgat
jack2964
Nonetheless a very crisp shot! I have a version 1 500/f4 IS sitting in my dry cabinet longing to be taken out but at my age I find it increasingly strenuous to lug this bazooka around. Instead I now prefer the light weight 400/5.6 for doing trails and a 300/2.8 for hide work. If anyone is interested please PM me for the 500/4. Ron19
A Willy Wagtail, only had a 18/55 lens on. No time to change and put the 75/330 on. Real pity, there were two and only 5 metres away. Couldn't crop it down further, bad enough as it is.

One of the most common garden birds in Thailand so you should get another chance at better pics.

Popular Post jack2964
Help me with this Shrike ID. Thanks. Taken at Huai Khok Mu view point Ratchaburi. This is a nice spot to camp although birding isn't great. But was well rewarded with a flypast of about 7 or 8 individuals. Wreathed Hornbill. Female with blue gular pouch. Unfortunately the sun was behind the birds Gear used Canon 7D with 400/5.6 hand held.

Popular Post Briggsy
I came across a male pied hornbill yesterday. It was acting unusually so I watched it for a bit. It turned out it was feeding the occupants of the nest. It struck me as an excellent opportunity for photographers as the location afforded some good views. If any of the regular posters would like the location (in Chonburi), you can PM me. I wouldn't want the nest disturbed as hornbills are susceptible to disturbance when breeding. 1

Range and season also come into play. Sometimes IMO unless an expert with bird-in-hand, impossible to ID with certainty. Check out Dusky, Buff-throated, Yellow-streaked and Raddes for starters. Similar in appearance to Oz's Willy Waggy, but 2 distinct and separate species. The scientific name of the Willy is Rhipidura leucophrys, while the Magpie-robin is Copsychus saularis. Despite the similar appearance, they are not closely related, if at all.
