Why Do Farangs Choose To Stay In Thailand?

In recent years I've found there are more and more Farangs coming and moving to Thailand. What is the most important reason making you like to stay here between...

1 the cheap cost of living

2 the kind hospitality of Thai people

3 the Thai's favour to Farangs

4 other reasons

and what is the thing that you don't really like staying here?

But, to answer the questions

There isn't just one simple reason. Yes, it's cheaper here, and the thais are more hospitable. A man over 40 years of age can find a long term partner who's closer to age 25.

I live by the ocean, for a mere fraction of what it would cost in the UK or USA. I like hot climates.

Some people like the food here; I don't, but that's okay.

About 13 years ago I came to work in Thailand and fell in love witha beautiful girl who was 21 years younger than me.

Now nearly 13 years later she is only 4 years older than she was then (so she tells me, I could never work out Thai girls ages anyway), we have been married for nearly 6 years and our son is 19 months old.

We live in the country near a couple of national parks and have a pretty good life on her farm.

I have done the bar scene and the girls scene long ago etc and now my life is pretty much content.

We have a lot of Thai friends and very few try to scam us or leach on us. Her brother, his wife and son live with us and her parents and the rest of the family are welcome any time.

I have no desire to live anywhere else and certainly not in the land of my parents which is the UK.

The odd tool goes missing now and again but it usually turns up after a while and even though we lock up at night I sometimes forget and nothing happens.

The main thing I dislike is that the good hospital for our son and also the nearest farang supermarket are 125 km away which is the drawback of living right out in the sticks.

I have been in and out of this Thailand for over 10 years. I know absolutely the reasons why the long stayers choose to stay here. A big percent of the foreign people have 2 simple combined reasons to stay here :

Cheap living cost and cheap and easy access to sex. I think even I am not excluded from this major group. And the same 2 simple hidden reasons also play some part of my decision of long stay in Brazil also. Plus being in Brasil, surrounded by beatiful beaches, with lovely sound of bossa nova, samba drums, sound of pagote, carnival beat, cappoeira, and millions of beautiful morenas in t-string, the huge variety of cultures, foods, landscapes also contribute to my long stay in Brasil's edge and advantage over Thailand.

In Thailand especially for the people over middle age who has some saving but not too much and who have trobles getting enough sex life back home or struggling with retirement lifestyle, they come to long stay here to fulfill their fantasy at the later part of their life with low cost, and possibly find a life partner.

After 2 years I think the place is a little over rated myself. That's why if and hopefully when my gals visa comes through, I'm goin home! I do have to thank Thailand for providing my life partner though. Sure I will be back for the odd holiday, but hey Australias a lucky country! Hard to beat the place.

My goodness danishgung, you come up with crap.

I know absolutely the reasons

What you know absolutely is what you think, no-one else. You take yourself as an example and believe everyone is the same. Guess what? It isn't so, but all of your posts are so full of generalisations, half-truths and complete nonsense that I would be surprised if anyone takes your garbage seriosuly anyway.

low cost, and possibly find a life partner.

Well, well, well - this part actually sounds like it might be applicable to many people here.

Thankfully the vast majority of friends and acquaintances I have that are non-Thai are not one bit like you.

May we assume that your parents asked you to move to a different country? :o

There is also that lack of stress over here, ya know? Except for when we plug ourselves into the city traffic, ain't no place quite so laid back and where, for the most part, one can feel relative safety anywhere in the country...

Some farangs live here, simply to irritate those people, who think we should all go back to our coutries-of-origin. :o Having opinions of our own, trying to think for ourselves, may be a crime in some places, but isn't (yet) here.

Many more of us, because we love our wives/husbands & families, who happen to be Thai. Same, Same, But Not Different.

It seems to be a common misconceiption among Thais that since you get 40 baht for a dollar and 60 (or whatever) for a pound, these countries must be 40 or 60 times richer than Thailand.

Oh, and we live here for no particular reason. Wife is Thai, we spent 10 years in Europe. Now we're spending some time here to balance things.

The love-it-or-leave it crowd on this board -- and it is either really huge or perhaps just very vocal -- can't seem to get it through its head that anyone could be here other than because he has chosen Thailand as the place in all the world that is best to live.

Heck, if that were true, we'd all be in Maui.

I'm back home now and it is very expensive here. As others have mentioned airport taxes and surcharges on a return SYD - BKK flight is $245.58 per person, that is a cool 7,000 baht! If you choose to take your lady to a Thai restaurant a green curry chicken with rice will set you back $17 (500 :o. It is so expensive here she won't believe it. But knowing good Thai women she will get a job pretty quick here even if it's just working at a supermarket and she will be very happy with the money she gets there.

Now back to the topic, last year when I was over for my 6 Months I travelled a lot. It is cheap, fun and exciting. There is nothing like hiring a motorcycle and just exploring different towns. I can afford to fly everywhere but never do, sometimes I deliberately jump on the orange open window buses as I get a buzz out traveling with locals. I was on an overcrowed song tao on Samui last year and I ended up standing on the back step and as we were heading into Chaweng up a hill I saw the most beautiful panoramic ocean views and I said to myself I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Thailand is a great place to travel in.

Are you guys trying to find a politically-correct answer? Is that the point of this topic?

I think if you asked any Thai person here why farangs come to Thailand, they would all give the same obvious answer. While I don't particularly like the rationale, I have nothing personally against the farangs who come here to look for women. As they say - don't hate the player, hate the game.

BOCTAOE (this is an acronym by cartoonist Scott Adams that means "but of course there are obvious exceptions" as someone will inevitably point to a minority segment of the population in order to prove me wrong. Yes I know there are people here for work too, although many will inevitably marry a Thai woman. And I definitely welcome more of the farangs that create jobs for Thai people).

I think that for many people, thailand is good value for retirement, especially if funds are just not enough to get by on in the West.

For others, it is difficult to leave thailand once you have been here a long time. Just saving up for a plane ticket , let alone setting oneself up in a western country, is not so easy when you are earning a tiny salary in thailand.

Also, it is easier to be poor in a warm country. And easier still, when there are many people with even less trying to eat and get a roof over their head, too: the widespread poverty keeps prices of necessities down.
