Hi all on the travel forum.

My husband and I want to visit a friend in hua hin for the weekend.

We don't mind trains or vans. Just trying to figure out the best way to get

Down there and stay without spending a ton of cash.

So any tips on cheap hotels and transport would be great.

The train is relaxing. Many out of Lopburi. If you took the 6am train it will get you to Bang Sue Junction [ no need to go to Bangkok] in time for a train that will be coming from Bangkok bound for Hua Hin. Arrive HH at 2pm. Both these trains are free if you are Thai. Otherwise about 30 Baht from Lopburi to Bang Sue.

Coming back there is a train out of Hua Hin at about 2pm & 4 pm. Easy to get back from Bang Sue to Lopburi.

You will have to change platforms at Bang Sue. About 100 yards walk.

Ordinary trains like these sometimes have a carriage with wooden seats. If you don't want that try another carriage.

Thanks I didn't realise that the train to hua hin goes from bang sue.

I didn't realise Thai got free, unless he's talking about 3rd class.

The Southern train does start off north going to Rama 7, past Bang Sue before turning around.

for the time being (I guess as long as red reigns) the only free trains are in 3d class-the all-stop rot thamada-and only for Thai. They still have to get a real ticket-that shows a 0bt fare-and agin for train 2.

Of course the train promoting sect never ever mentions that this is also by far the slowest and least comfy option-not counting the eternal delays.

Normal Thai would not even think of it. They use a bus or minibus=van to BKK (the vans are best option-as they also go INto town and end at Vict.Monument) and the same ditto for ride 2 (which is much faster-the main road cuts off side 3 of a traingle)-and the vans for this also lve from near the Vict Mon-at a hospital parking.

By dep Lopb by 6.00 you may reach HHin this way by 11.00-plus they run much, much ore often. But its not free.

ALL main line trains to anywhere in TH START at HLPong-and then stop at samsen-10 mins after and then BangSue (often much longer for rot thamada-as they often change engines or detach empty cars)-20/25 mins later. It is intended to form bangSue into a main big modern station-when those superfasties may ever come in, and close the line into HLPong-as it disrupts BKK traffic for hours a day.

I once spent 4 hours in a van from lop buri to bangkok. Stuck in traffic for almost 2.5 hours. Freezing and hungry.

When I got out I had a lung infection. I prefer taking a train that out 8 times I've used it I have had 3 delays. And the longest one was 20 mins. On the train I can open and close my own window. Put the fan on or off. And I can buy food and water whenever I want to and use the toilet which normally has toilet paper in it. And the best part is the ticket costs 28 baht.
