I have an Olympus camera that has served me well for several years.

It needs a new power on/off switch as you have to hold the button down or it turns off...other than that it works just fine.

I hate to trash it over a switch and would love to get it repaired if it is possible to do so for a reasonable price.

Anyone have any idea of a camera repair shop in CR that might be able to assist?

I understand it is not what you are asking but I often view the demise of an older item as an opportunity to get something shiny and new. With the advances in camera design and technology over the last few years it wouldn’t hurt to take a look at the new stuff available while you are asking about repair options and cost. Just something to think about.

Yes probably will end up buying new but i just hate to trash a good camera over a little switch...even if i buy a new one I would prefer to at least give my old one to some poor thai kid than throw it in the trash.

Finding a new and worthy home for the old item is always a nice idea, as long as it doesn’t cost to much to repair. Now back to repairs, I guess you start making the rounds and asking at various camera shops. I would start with the shops at Central Plaza. I have sometimes found staff to be quite knowledgeable and helpful, not always but sometimes.wink.png

G'day Pomchop

I think you might struggle to get it fixed at a reasonable price

to be honest mate. They're made so cheap and disposable these days.

Case in point. The wife bought a Panasonic Lumix from Big C last year.

After 8 months it just froze. She took it back to the store, who asked her to

take it to the authorised repairer in Central. This was a little camera shop

just around the corner from Power Buy.

Basically, they had a look at it, confirmed it was damaged, took details and said

they would get back to us after contacting Bangkok. The next week received a

phone call to come and collect a new one. BTW, the original had already been

superseded after only 8 months, so was given a new model.

I think "authorised repairer" these days means just check to make sure it is damaged

and then arrange a replacement.

So as VF said above, a trip to Central would be your first port of call I'd imagine.

just looked on Ebay and find used models of my camera for about 5 USD...amazing...so obviously would make zero sense to try and repair it....so i will just give it to a thai kid as it works just fine as long as you manually hold the power swith on....for a poor kid it would likely be better than nothing as it does take nice pics....

In general, "point and shoot" cameras are being displaced by smart phones (at least the lower end ones) Then you add in the factor of frequent 'model upgrades' :-(

One idea: contact camera clubs, specially those in schools or colleges. If they cannot repair it, they would certainly know where to go.

Another idea: if you wish to give away, know anyone with Myanmar connections? I don't know if it's also true for cameras but I do know that retired computers + other electrical gadgets are still wanted. Just like in China, I find there is less of a throwaway mentality and people more willing/able to recyle/repair. I'm going next month with a MacPack with frayed handles. I could find nobody in Malaysia or Singapore to repair, not even so-called luggage repair shops. When I mentioned this to the agency doing my Myanmar visa, they said "oh there are hundreds of places in Yangon where you can get it patched up." I don't doubt it.

I know a bunch of dirt poor CR high school kids...will give it to one of them and suspect they will be thrilled to have it even if they do have to hold the power button down manually...i just hate to throw away a camera that i paid several hundred bucks for and much happier to see somebody get some use out of it...i suspect it has a lot of life left in it...
