Is said man Thai or farang? Can't help but wonder how desperate the parents were.

Based on the customary two-tier pricing, a farang would have had to pay at least 4000 to the greedy swine who call themselves parents.

Totally revolting!!!

I wonder how the socioligists can explain such acts opposite Buddhism and Thai culture. What human, social, cultural or parental values does

Seeing as Buddism orginated in India and this practice is still common today in India/Sri Lanka one suspects Buddhism has nothing to say on this matter, so dont see how you can relate this to a buddhist "culture"

its most likley its no more than a few hundred years that these sorts of acts were common in the west as well...its just that social and cultural values have developed/moved on in the west while Thailand is still far behind in this regard,

further you are viewing this with your western eyes, the family concerned most likley see nothing wrong with this, and a lot of farangs in Thailand have condoned this practice, via the sin sot system, taking the age of the girl out of the equation, many farangs have bought someones daughter when they married them

Except......in India there is no sin sod sot system. In fact quite the opposite. There a girl is regarded as a liability to the family, as the family has to give a dowry to the man to marry the daughter. So somehow the Thais have reversed that.....

From a CNN article about having a daughter in India....

http://edition.cnn.c...?iref=allsearch

Girls are also seen as a financial liability. Once they get married, they leave the house and are often required to take hefty dowries along with them which sometimes can cost a family's entire savings. The practice is banned by the government, but it's still as common as ever.

And yes I agree. If you marry a Thai girl after

giving a bunch of money to her family, you have effected a de facto purchase. No matter the family says about

Thai tradition....This case is especially perverse due to the age of the girl.

Ok point taken, but there is still a financial transaction involved, someone is still buying or selling a person..

some interesting reading in this and it appears this practice is condoned in the Jewish bible as well as the Bible..."Deuteronomy 22:28-29" of course the age of the girl is not stated...

In Thailand, if you have no money, you have no rights. 2,000 baht isn't much, but it's more than the zero baht that the girl or her parents probably had. Stories like these, as horrible as they are, mostly cause outrage among foreigners and a handful of NGOs but few others. I don't know if things are improving or not in the Thai society, but somehow I doubt it. This country has a long way to go.

Certain areas of Thailand practice this notably the Chang Rai area, but to paint ALL of Thailand as condoning this is absolute ignorance.

Huh? They regale people with it in the celebrity magazines.

Surely that makes it largely universal. Every Thai wedding i have been to over 16 years, had sin sot of some sort.

I used to find this stuff hard to believe. How a mother could sell there kids under any circumstance.

However two friends of mine had to buy there daughters back from there mothers, after being threatened with not seeing them again or them being farmed out to there families.

One went for 10k another 35k both kids are now in Europe legally and doing very well with there respective fathers. In both cases the only contact the mother has made since was when they fell on hard times and wanted more money.

I struggle to see how women like this can be called mothers start with.

Which is what sin sod is.......selling the daughter. You give the family a bunch of money, and then you marry the daughter.

What part is confusing about that ?? I did get a laugh from an excerpt for the wikipedia article about bride price.

The bride price may range from nothing, if the woman is divorced, has a child fathered by another man, or is widely known to have had premarital relations with men; upwards to tens of millions of Thai baht (US$300,000) for a woman of high social standing, a beauty queen, or a highly educated woman.

That has to punch a hole in any negotiations about sin sod by a bar girl's family..........cheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Thailand only abolished slavery in 1905. So perhaps from a cultural standpoint, there is a carry over where parents

feel they own their child, and can therefor sell her / him.

Foundation chairwoman Pavena Hongsakul and the police immediately went to the child's house after receiving complaints from villagers about the incident. The man, his parents, and the victim's parents were brought in for questioning.

To say that they are simply greedy is so far from the real issues. Those that do this are without doubt the lowest forms of life that ever crawled out of the swamp.

They will claim Buddism says up to you do not look at others keep a clean mind for yourself. It is their business Are you writing a book making fun of a Culture?

But her older sister want 1,000,000 sin sod from a Farang Can you believe what Farangs pays

Well here's another example, a look krueng boy (around 24 yrs old) gets married about 3 years back (boy lives at home with grand parents who have raised the boy, in Udon Thani, boy looks Thai, nobody would ever suspect that he has a western father, and in fact the boy has never met nor knows the global whereabouts of his biological father, nor knows the full name of his biological father (name on birth certificate shows a typical western first name but no family name, mother admits the father is a farang and it's common knowledge locally that the boy has a farang father)), nor knows why or when etc., his biological father visited Thailand, doesn't even know whether his biological father is even dead or alive, and doesn't have enough information to get any further information on his father).

Girls (Thai) family insist that the groom must pay a farang sin sod. Boy gets big loans from numerous family members etc., (all Thai) and pays around 1,000,00Baht sin sod.

The twist: the girl is a lesbian and has been well entrenched in a relationship with another lesbian girl for years, but her parents believe they can 'change' her by forcing her to get married to a selected boy.

The young man concerned knows all the girls history but tries to play the game, but is totally naive.

End results, seperated within 60 days (boy says they never had sex - therefore luckily no baby involved), boy still paying off the loans for the sin sod, some pressure from other family members to return the sin sod money, girls family refuse, in their eyes they are entitled to keep the money beacause there is a farang somewhere in the picture.

I saw a similar tale unfold.

A stunningly beautiful young girl had just finished highschool and turned 18 (I will call her Noy for the sake of this story). She was (is) a great kid and I knew her well as she often helped on the farm. I assumed she would do well in her life as she was lovely, smart, had a wicked sense of humour and was working hard to improve her English.

Her dad had a small truck as his business with a substantial loan shark amount used to facilitate the purchase. The dad fell off the back tailgate of his truck one day and seriously busted his leg. After much surgery his leg is still no good. He can't use the clutch.

Needless to say the loan shark came a callin...

The parents response was to put the virginity of Noy up for auction in the surrounding villages. The highest sinsot bidder was a greasy, pock faced, beer gutted 57 year old Thai man. He sold a few rai of his Sor Bor Kor land to come up with the princely sum of 70,000 THB.

The marriage ceremony was conducted swiftly and cheaply in the village and then Noy was whisked off to the nuptial bed by her new husband.

A week or so later, Noy took off somewhere...no one knows where.

I truly hope she is well and with people that do not abuse her.

And what has all of that to do with a 13 (in words: thirteen ) year old girl was raped and sold of for 2000 baht to her rapist?

Thought these kind of stories were an urban myth. Guess not.... :-( As well I think this story will have a

detrimental effect on the value of sin sod for bar girls. " But honey I just saw a sin sod of 2000 baht on Thai Visa. Why does your

family want one million baht? " I think Thai at Heart is correct, these people must be from another planet.

Who in the hell would sell their daughter?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

This type of story is one that no one really likes to talk about, or even think about for that matter. You will notice that those that think the LOS is the best place on earth, will be absent from this thread.

Maybe some people read horrific stories likes this such as rape, child molestation, murder, child torture, mass killings of children and so and so on and are just no so ignorant to believe when these tragic stories come up they are not only not representative of an entire nation's people but only a very small fraction of people However it is entertaining to read some posters comments who appear to have no concept of why things make the news or are so unhappy they they want to label an entire group of people or their country by the acts of a very few sick individuals
