ginjag
Reading more would mean discovery of the truth, and the truth is a rare commodity in Thailand, especially when it comes to their vast mythos of history, religions, origins of their culture, language and many other hard-to-deal-with subjects that are unfortunately beyond reproach. The whole house of cards could so easily fall apart. It's hard to deal with for Westerners too. It's worrying how many Westerners themselves fail to pick up a proper book and learn about Thailand and it's culture, religion, etc before mindlessly repeating what Thais are spoon-fed in their sub-standard education system; the self-congratulatory, iconographic, narrow-minded untruths just seem to be accepted without question. So we are no better fellow bar-stool occupiers. I thought most westerner's got their info about Thais and Thailand by reading ... even if it is mainly the doom and gloom perspective shared by curmudgeons on Thaivisa. Nisa do you think All persons on Thai Visa are doom and gloom ???? You are the one ALWAYS crying anyone down who uses constructive criticism against anything deemed out of order, or suggestions that could improve society. The only way to move forward is to fight against anything dodgy---so here we are living in Thailand and doing our best to HELP improve situations--a small voice is better than no voice. If a report says Thais are reading the wrong type of material--or not even reading, these are warning signs. I know that anywhere you go you will find 6-20 year olds buying comics to read, and to top that watch cartoon T.V. To try to help the situ the authorities have to change things--example---soap T.V.---rubbish and bad for the image of Thai---too much aggression and not enough correct dicipline. Kids here find good reading BORING..apart from the chosen few. all rural libraries are the 7-11 shop......................having piles of CARTOON books----BIG profit comes first here---you know that---example Thai Airways---your quote on their last 8 years.

Comic books are OK as long as they are a proper comic in a literary sense. http://www.telegraph...ablishment.html The central misconception around comics is the idea that they’re a genre, not a medium. The roots of 20th-century popular comics may well be in genre fiction: we’re all familiar with the zap-pow-whoppery of early superhero comics, whose campy cadences were deftly caught in the old Adam West television adaptations of Batman, and with the use of “comic-book” as an adjective synonymous with primary-coloured morality and cartoon violence. But although superhero stories are still as active a part of the comics medium as its other ancestor, the “funny papers” strip cartoon, many creators and artists have devoted years of energy and talent to guiding the medium out of its generic constraints. You will notice contrast between the Thai and British comic. The Thai comic reflecting the female dominant role that is familiar to most men in Thai society and ending this morality tale with a happy reunion with his male friends at the pub. WhingeingMoaners
It is funny that I have seen a lot of bookstores in Thailand. If Thais did not read, there would not be so many bookstores there.
