Krabi earned Bt42 billion from tourism last year

By English News

KRABI, Jan 16 – Thailand’s famous resort province of Krabi generated at least Bt42 billion in revenue from almost three million Thai and foreign tourists last year, a senior tourism official reported.

Viyada Srirangkul, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Krabi office, said tourists to Krabi last year increased by 10 per cent from 2011 partly due to tourism campaigns and promotions during the low season.

The provincial tourism industry has enhanced its low season market partly by focusing on tourists in neighbouring countries including Malaysia, Singapore, China, India and South Korea, who contributed to higher room occupancy, she said.

The arrival of Malaysian tourists has increase by 25 per cent while the ratio of Thai and foreign tourists was 40:60.

Ms Viyada said TAT officials in Krabi, together with tourism and hotel operators, will participate in road shows and tourism promotional events overseas to attract visitors from Germany, Australia, India, Malaysia and China, and Thais in the domestic market.

The goal is to increase the number of tourists by at least 10 per cent and to generate a Bt45 million revenue this year, she said. (MCOT online news)

Nice chunk of change. Tourisim isn't the only pillar of the Thai economy- but it sure helps smile.png

well almost none is put back into the resort of Ao Nang...just try and walk on ANY footpath without falling down a hole and the garbage situation is beyond a joke. There are so many problems here and i,ve seen no changes in 4 years only things getting worse

The Goldern Goose is still giving eggs so never mind.....Thais are just plain dumb

More pie in the sky talk and figures, how an earth would they be able to calculate these figures most of the money changing hands is cash and hardly any of it gets declared as most of the smaller resorts are not registered and don't keep accounts

Thats a tiny amount....if I got my calculator up the right way....its only 14k baht per tourist.....seems very low.

As it is with Samui and Koh Pangan, the tax money from these takings goes to the provincial authority, which then decides that it would be "wasteful" to shoot some of it back to maintaining and improving the place that generated it in the first place.

But I would differ with one remark - "Thais" aren't dumb, (no more than people anywhere else - there was no shortage of idiots in my home country of Canada - and those people had a decent education, so have no excuse). Your statement is sweeping, unfair and racist - and likely in violation of forum rules. But the system Thais live under (the one they inherited) certainly can appear pretty stupid... The concepts of face and patriarchy - basically Confucianism - constantly conflict with modern development concepts, particularly because they can't keep up with the pace of change - the old system advocates "slow and steady" and was adopted in reaction to centuries of chaos.

The system definitely needs to be reformed, but it is so ingrained that it will take a very long time for that to happen. It is a bit like when creationists ask the boneheaded question: "Why aren't chimpanzees evolving now?" Well, they actually are (and so are we), but it is happening too gradually to for us to observe the changes. Much of the conflict in Thailand now, confused and vested and rooted in the old system as it is on both sides, could well be a part of this systemic evolution.

The average tourist only stays there a few days, so the figure should be correct.., how much do you spend on a weekend holiday?

No kidding. If I stayed a week and flew into Krabi, I *might* spend up to 14k baht.

Comparing the evolution of Thailand to that of chimpanzees is a bit bizarre ! I would argue that they have adapted admirably to the 21st century and their country's rapid emergence from the 3rd world ! I mean, most 10yr olds are computer/ mobile phone savvy and most adults can "point and shoot" a new Toyota pick-up !

I maintain that the Mindset, and how to change it for the better in certain aspects, is the main problem. You have choices ...you can dispose of your rubbish responsibly or you can discard it un-caringly, you can ignore rules and regulations made in your interests or you can comply ...especially relevant concerning road safety. Lack of maintainence ,by the Auhorities of public/tourist amenities is no different from the short-sightedness of the average motorcyclist who never deems it necessary or cost- worthy to replace a failed tail light.
