Tywais
Study: 1366x768 now the most popular screen resolution For a long time, the most popular resolution to view content on a PC monitor was 1024x768. Now a new study from StatCounter claims that size has now been overtaken in popularity by a much larger resolution, 1366x768. StatCounter says it began recording monitor resolution statistics for the PC in March 2009. At that time the 1024x768 size was by far the most popular resolution. The company's information showed that 41.8 percent of PC users had their screens set at that viewing size. However, over the past three years the 1024x768 resolution has been slowly losing its popularity while the 1366x768 resolution size, which had just 0.68 percent of a PC monitor's market share in March 2009, has been used by PC customers more and more. Finally, in March 2012, StatCounter claims that the 1366x768 resolution had 19.28 percent for PC monitor users compared to 18.6 percent for 1024x768. Tywais
9.97% of all traffic to websites being monitored using StatCounter have a display resolution of 1024 x 768; and while that number is slowly reducing, it’s still important to ensure your designs work well on lower display resolutions. But why? Let’s find out. First, let’s look at some statistics. So let’s have a look at the statistis for June 2012. 24.31% – 1366 x 768 14.18% – 1280 x 800 9.97% – 1024 x 768 7.26% – 1280 x 1024 6.92% – 1440 x 900 6.13% – 1920 x 1080 5.21% – 768 x 1024 3.74% – Unknown 3.46% – 1600 x 900 What does this indicate to us? It indicates that most people either use laptops or monitors with small resolutions. Although monitors sold nowadays typically are from 19″ to 24″ likely with a resolution higher than 1366 x 768, although there are still some 19″ monitors sold with a resolution around 1366 x 768. Lower resolutions. What about tablet computers? While Apple currently has the largest market share in the tablet market, another major player is also about to enter the market – Microsoft, with Windows 8. It is possible that the use of tablet computers will increase as Windows has the widest brand recognition, and Microsoft’s Windows 8 is their flagship software product; so Microsoft will be marketing Windows 8 heavily. So it’s easy to predict that for the future, usage of tablet computers is only on the rise. Many Windows 8 tablets will likely have higher resolutions than 1024 x 768. In fact, many already have higher resolutions – some as high as 1920 x 1080 and some lower than 1024 x 768 ... more
jbrain
I think that means that too many pc users watch movies on their monitor instead of using it for working purposes.

Tywais
Unknown also could be mobile phones ? From reading StatCounter I believe they are excluding mobile screens in the stats. Also, the stats I believe are based on the browser supplied data via API calls so perhaps some OSes are not co-operative.
