New alcohol bans will be made aware to public

BANGKOK, 17 January 2013 (NNT)-The Interior Minister has indicated that alcohol control laws will be strictly enforced to curb underage drinking and new drinkers across Thailand in an attempt to create social order.

Interior Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan said he has instructed all provincial governors, in their capacity as chairperson of the provincial Liquor Control Board, to keep the sale of alcohol under surveillance. The governors have been asked to strictly see to it that no liquor is sold to juveniles or anyone below the age of 20, and that alcohol sales must not be allowed in government offices, public parks and temples .

According to the Minister, the government enforced three new laws last year prohibiting sales and drinks of alcohol in three places, namely on pavement, roadside areas and public walkways, in factories and lastly, in government units and state enterprises. In order to strictly enforce the laws, he said the legislation must be publicized continuously among public members.

Minister Jarupong added that alcohol control would be particularly enforced at the district level with a target to eliminate entertainment places such as pubs and bars around schools which have become vice dens for youngsters.

The Minister also indicated that he would step up a campaign to promote alcohol-free celebrations in various festivals and other social events such as Buddhist ordination and funerals.

This is the bluff before the sucker punch. Police forces around the nation will be upping the collections from the unlicensed sellers of alcohol and those that turn a blind eye to sales to minors.

Well, to be fair, this surely excludes our Dept. PM Pol. Captain Chalerm who's neither underage nor new to the game :-)

Much like the smoking ban in bars this is just another tool for the BIB to make more money, laughable!

But nooooooooooo, where l live kids drive scooters with keys from their parents, most folk ride with no helmet, aaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllll covered by law, but still those with a stick do nothing to earn cash. Me, bewildered at the cash the law can earn, BUT................................

In my area in Isaan nobody bother's about alcohol sale hours nor selling cigarettes and alcohol to minors. These village shops sell all hours and if they are closed you just knock on the fence and they open up and sell... "Open all hours" here and to everybody, kids from 6 up can buy the stuff.

Nothing will change in my area of the woods... ever... !

I remember the days when I would arrive early morning at Don Muang, and behind the immigration desk would be a table with some offiials and a large Chang on the table .

No alcohol for those below 20 yrs! How does this get enforced at Sunee Plaza where 15 to 19 year old's party with their Grandpa's till the wee hours - feasting on sangson & beer. Thailand has a law for everything with 1 in every 50 laws enforced.

no sales at certain times at big stores, make it 9-11 11-5 5-11 then only if you buy 3 and a quarter boxes ha ha ha what a bleeding circus....... bloody idiots-not knowing what to come up with next..the under age could improve the booze law, it will not affect them at all --the kids will be in stitches when they find out this latest cock up.

What they really should curb is the small food vendors selling alcohol with the meal with no place to urinate excepting on the wall or behind cars. have you ever smelt the stench of continuous urine after after three weeks with no rain to wash it away? and the school kids have to walk past the stench everyday on the way to the bus stop.

Just another pointless law. The only beneficiaries will be the B.i.B. hitting on Farang tourists. The 2,000 Baht hit for cigarettes was a terrific rort but faded out quickly. Perhaps this law should be passed by TAT for their opinion as they seem to be struggling a bit these days with too many scams, unexplained deaths, unaccounted suicides and of course the Duty Free ripoffs. Makes you think they want to keep Thailand strictly for Thais.

What are you going on about? You think they made the new law to extort money from tourists?

This law is about juveniles and starting to drink. Not about the BiB extorting money from foreigners.

I'm sure of that as about 10 years ago at around 3AM a police officer I knew told me 'k. Rubl, you know you shouldn't be here at this time' following which he charge the bartendee who had to accompany them to the police station. She had to carry a beer bottle as evidence. Friendly as the local BiB always is, they told her to take a Singha bottle as Thai beer would give a lower penalty.

They had better go and enforce this law in the road at the side of Central Lapro, There are tables on the pavement right outside Horwang school. It's completely blocking the right of way and you have to walk on the road to get past a load of low life's sitting there most nights with their Changs, Leos and Laow cows.The law's definitely an ass.

Now don't be hasty, sir First of Mel. The 'crackdown' is on 'juvenile drinkers' AND on 'new drinkers'. Now I may be wrong ( it does happen occasionally ), but the topic probably refers to all those new MPs in government offices. Decent, upright fellows who may sometimes totally freak-out with all the Machiavellian cynism they encounter for the first time in their lives. They may feel the need to grab a bottle (or two) and for sure those of k. Chalerm are off limit to them.

Now our Dept PM Pol. Captain Chalerm I'm sure never buys alcohol in or on government premises, or even elsewhere. Apart from being an examplary (ex ?) police officer, he has his people to provide for him.

BTW the failing most likely was a typo? Falling was meant, as in stumbling like a few days ago

Why don't they just lower the drinking age to 18 to stop the rampant production of fake ID's that can easily be bought almost anywhere? The FACT is that kids under 20 do drink, we should be creating a social system that focuses on protecting children, because this is an extremely serious matter. I don't think the government realizes how much underage drinking actually goes on in Thailand.
