They Pray On The Side Walk And On The Road.!

Recommended Posts

I have seen a lady who placed 30 chairs in front of her shop to invite people to prey. Probably some monks will come.

The chairs are on the road with eavy traffic passing just 1 meter of the last row of chairs.

She placed 2 of these orange cones to delimit the perimeter.

Do you think a drunk guy at 100km/h by bike or truck will be able to avoid them.?

What's wrong here?

They say they have no place to sit people.... Or say everybody do the same.... Oh com'on, this is not an excuse. Roads are not temples.... Roads are not markets.... This is not Safe.!

I am just tired to see these accidents coming and everybody say it s normal...

Accept it or look away, but don't try to reason with security with them (the Thais)...

Such merit ceremonies are of utmost importance for the luck of the business and NOT doing it would mean bad, bad, baaaaaaaaaaaaaad Kharma for the shop and the owner would loose confidence in the success of his own business and employees would quit as they don't want to work in a shop that has not been blessed...

I have seen countless concerts, traveling fairs, funerals, weddings etc. use the streets and hiways for these things when often times there is a large vacant lot next door or nearby. I wonder if by imposing on others use of the roads, makes them feel particularly important.

It is not about feeling important... you can NOT use the property of somebody else for your own merit ceremony, you must do it either on your own property or on the public property in front of your shop... it's that simple, it's their Buddhism belief...

"They Prey On The Side Walk And On The Road"

I thought this topic was about ladyboys.

For some reason, The Living Dead sprang to mind when I read it.......................biggrin.png

"Do you think a drunk guy at 100km/h by bike or truck will be able to avoid them.?"

Also having a bit of difficulty placing the location; anybody, drunk or sober, that travels at 160.9344 kph on any road over here on the inside lane is a danger to anyone.............wink.png

prey - to make a victim (of others), as by profiting at their expense

pray - to utter prayers (to God or other object of worship)

In fact, either of these may be appropriate; it's all in how you look at it.

Last I checked 100 km/h = 100 kph.

Seems perfectly normal, everyone knows that the space in front of a shop, up to the centre line of the road, is for the shop to use as they see fit.

So she is using her space for a few days, don't worry she'll let vehicles and probably pedestrians use it again after a few days.

Cannot quote you a law on this usage, but most shop owners I've spoken to say this is true, so it must be. whistling.gif

BUT ... the message is still the same, "anybody, drunk or sober, that travels at 100 kph on any road over here on the inoutside lane is a danger to anyone".

They even placed fans on the sidewalk, and people are seated on ground with kids around. They serve drink and food. You can not walk on the side walk of course.!

They have parked a few cars behind the seat, they have taken the parking line plus half of one side of the road for their little ceremony.

Still cars can go, but it s NOT safe. Cars don't slow down... They even go faster to pass the lights in time. They are 150 meters from an intersection.

No wonder why 15000people/year are killed on a public place.

Let one of these few kids to play around, one second of inattention...

These people are just irresponsible and that 's get on my nerve . I am happy to not need a car in Thailand because I will be automatically responsible if an accident happen.

I agree totally with the OP.

Swiss1960 is so far off the mark here its given me a right chuckle. Methinks someone's learning his Thai culture 101 from his wife.....

Am I, really??? Then kindly let me know how many such ceremonies you did attend in how many years and how many times you have talked with the monks and got your information first hand... my figures are 5 / 7 / 3... Methinks once you are off your heavy drinking and tell us what you think and what you experience is, we can continue this discussion...

LOL!

It is ALL about feeling important. Why else do you think they put on such an ostentatious display?

Your knowledge of Buddhism from your beer bar discussions with your drinking buddies is soooooooo overwhelming that I humbly withdraw my statements which I gatherd in real life with real Thai people... whistling.gif

Oh how one chuckles at assumptions, especially if you really think the main reason for such a thing is religion...

My advice. Learn to read between the lines...

Thank you for the education. I had no idea that setting up a party that annoys and inconveniences other people is in line with Buddhist teaching.

I must admit that I always thought it was about "Look at me, see how important I am" Thankyou for pointing out my mistake.

But his figures are 5/7/3!!!!

He actually keeps a tally of how many monks he's spoken too....and I thought the orgy raid post was the funniest post today....

Oh, I thought uniforms were for that.

It is quite a cultural clash when western uniformed personnel are advised to dress in civvies so as to not attract attention, but my friend a hospital administrator, loves to put on his white uniform with all his ribbons and decorations. He's s got as much bling as some of my classmates that have full time military careers serving in multiple war zones and UN peacekeeping missions.

Anyone who honestly thinks this is about Buddhism and not about all about a public display of importance really hasn't grasped the basics of life here yet. For a country of 'Buddhists' there seems to be an awful lot who are overly materialistic carnivores. Hardly in line with the Buddha's teachings of respecting all life and renouncing material possessions. The vast majority of 'Buddhists' here are as hypocritical as the pro-death, anti-gay, gun toting, bible thumping do gooders in the US of A.

That's exactly the kind of generalization which I hate most and is seen so often from posters here in ThaiVisa...
