Soi Dog Killing Cats, What Would You Do?

Cats are 10 times more destructive to native bird and animal life than dogs will ever be, and when was the last time you saw a cat with a bell in Thailand? Thais (and some falangs) are totally irresponsible when it comes to desexing their animals and cats tend to breed like rabbits. Unless you're prepared to keep a cat inside or in a cat run I'm all for shooting on sight, I'm sick of their screeching all night and sh*tting all over my lawn.

yup agree.... poisoning them aint easy either... cats are not as greedy as dogs..... Cats dont trust anyone.... they always sniff before they taste..... dogs rarely do

I've found most pharmacies in Thailand will sell you just about any kind you want without a prescription.

I beg to differ you are right for the tourist areas but other places the do uphold the law. If i want something like that i go to the tourist area's.

I shouldn't have said "most", because I obviously haven't tried them all, but all the ones I have tried (and not in a tourist area) have never knocked me back when I've asked for sleeping pills.

Ok do you get real ones or anti histamines. They used to give that, told me real ones could not be sold. But in bkk where the tourists go i could get it. Not out for a fight here just different experience.

All real, Valium whatever.

THanks for this response, but I think relocation is just subjecting other cats to death, and he will probably just comeback. These attacks are all at late night, they are for sport only as the animals are not eaten, noone responds to pleas to adopt him, and the dog needs to be put down, so just looking for humane suggestions.

"The neighbor plans to get poison, but what's a better relatively humane way ?" I wanted to say "wait, there is a local solution to expect soon."

Another solution would be, to migrate the dog to another location.

Or get him one of this fanncy 'taser' dog collars.

You push the remote, as soon he attacks something!

And what about cats killing birds for sports ? Is that any different ? Should they be put down too ?

and what is with hunter killing animals in forest for sports or fisher?

Should we put them down too?

Generally people are only allowed to hunt in certain seasons so as to guarantee the continuity of the species. They also usually kill the animals for food as well as sport. The days of tiger and rhino hunts are pretty much over, unless it's illegal poaching. Cats however, kill indiscrimately for the fun of it and are responsible for decimating large populations of birds and lizards etc.

Get a pistol. Put a tasty bowl of food infront of the dog and when he's eating shoot him in the back of the head. He won't know anything. Honestly, if you do it right it's probably the least painful. My biology teacher said he does this with so many stray cats on his farm. It's not from personal experience.

Sorry you are complete wrong, in Europe it is very common to pay a lot money to shoot a large deer or some other animals, it is a big industry and of course you can still legally book an elephant in Africa or an bear. "Sport" is nothing different than "for fun".

Cats are actually not doing it for "fun", they are doing it to sharpen their skills. Which of course decimating large populations of birds and lizards and endangered species.

the problem is that people have cats as pets. Feeding them well and let them out. Free wild cats struggling to find enough food would kill and breed much less.

There certainly seems to be an inordinate number of cats in the OP's neighbourhood. Where in hell is he living?

Thinking the same thing, maybe the dog is scared that the cats are taking over the soi??

here in our soi there are at least 3 cats all the time in front of our house and two in the back side. There are at least 2 neighbors with a lot cats >5. But I think that are "inhouse" cats.

Completely wrong? Generally the people who pay to shoot animals, whether it be deer or elephants, are only allowed to do so because there is a surplus of that particular breed, so the animal is being culled. In the case of deer, the animal is dressed after being killed and the meat eaten, probably the same with an elephant. Cats will kill whether domesticated or feral, and in a lot of countries the cat is an introduced species with no natural predators, so local wildlife doesn't stand a chance. BTW, ever see a cat toying with a bird or mouse for hours before killing it? If that's not for fun I don't know what is.

They are often breed for getting shot (on some birds). If the meat is eaten or not is not important it is shot for fun. The old deer might be mixed into sausage but elephant meat?

The hunter wouldn't pay a fortune if they wouldn't like to do it.

OK, kill all human hunters and save all the sweet little moggies.

Okay this topic has gone completely OT.

Who cannot buy sleeping pills in BKK? You are not trying hard enough. Xanax is easy to get. Or go to a a Thai doctor and ask for some. Easy!

Looks like, you don't know, what sleeping tablets are.

Xanax is not sleeping medicine! It's a side effect, only.

that's why I asked 'real sleeping tabs' ???

http://www.drugs.com/xanax.html

What is Xanax?

Xanax (alprazolam) belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines. It works by slowing down the movement of chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced. [...]

Something like this is indeed easy to get.

But try to get sleeping tabs, not something that may get you 'relaxed'.

You can try earplugs and blindfolds, instead. May work as effective and isn't affecting you in the next 24h's

btw: Asking doctors for some (Stilnox, p.ex) is mostly : Can not. Go to hospital. They can

Sleeping tabs are more difficult to get, than Viagra. Maybe b/c you can kill people with 'em, very easy?

Wow, fairly popular subject Thanks for al the responses

OK update;

After the local foreigner run shelter told me they would not take the dog as they won't euthanize healthy dogs, and would not be able to adopt him out, the Thais neighbor who lost chickens called today and spoke with Thai staff and suddenly the dog is a recognized danger and was accepted to that shelter.

So as much as I considered beating him to a bloody- fuzz pulp or see him vomit or choke until his eyes popped out I just couldn't and seems he gets a second chance.

I did scrawl Cat Killer on him with permanent marker .

Yeah I now realize I don't like dogs one bit, stink, they eat sh*t and pee on anything vertical.

Shame on the vet I say. coffee1.gif

The vets a Budhist

Actually he's Muslim, non practicing as far as I know -he's talked me into putting other animals down when I didn't want to. And he had a weird reason-asked me to consider if I would want to be killed if I did something wrong ?

Well If I were a murderer.... in Thailand I well may get sentenced to death.

But advising the temple is just plain wrong, no solution for anyone

He's killing cats, you say? What to do about it, you ask?

Reward him?

Sammy Whiskers votes ," Death penalty !! " He suffered from an attack about two weeks ago. He has lost the use of his paw , maybe forever. And his eyes have been watering since then, too.
