NEW YORK, January 31 (RIA Novosti) - The defense team of Russian businessman Viktor Bout, convicted for arms trafficking in the United States, has filed an appeal against the guilty verdict, his lawyer told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

Bout, detained in a joint operation by US and Thai authorities in Bangkok in 2008, was sentenced to 25 years in prison last April for conspiring to kill U.S. citizens and sell arms to Colombian militants.

He has denied wrongdoing called the trial politically motivated, a claim echoed by Russian officials.

Lawyer Albert Dayan said that in his appeal he proves that Bout was innocent and that his case was politically motivated.

“Viktor had no intention of cooperating with Colombian left-wing radicals, agents of special services drew him in the scheme that they had designed,” he said.

The US Department of Justice rejected Russia’s extradition request for Bout last November.

His money isn't doing him any good while he's in prison. He might as well spend it on lawyers. At least he'll be able to meet privately with his lawyer visitors and get a break from the routine of prison.

It wasn't just the americans who were after him. The countries after him were trying to protect innocent lives. Not a bad thing to do, right??

"Kill them, and kick them out of my country," the informant said on the tape. "They don't care where they go any more.

Bout was quoted as replying: "Yes, yes, yes. They act as if … as if it was their home."

The informant then testified that during the same conversation, Bout wrote down a list of weapons he could provide on a sheet of paper and told him: "And we have the same enemy."

Asked what that meant, the informant responded: "He was referring to the Americans."

For those that don't know a Protective Service Officer is a member of the Victoria Police. They provide security at courts, parliarment house, government buildings and the train networks. They wear white shirts instead of blue and carry gold badges instead of silver.
