Thailand will not set up refugee camp for Rohingyas: NSC

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Security Council (NSC) on Thursday insisted that Thailand would not set up a refugee camp for Rohingyas who had fled violence in Myanmar and arrived in Thailand's southern provinces.

newsjs

NSC secretary general Lt Gen Paradorn Pattanathabutr said that 1,400 Rohingyas are currently detained in various southern provinces after illegally entering the country.

According to the Thai immigration laws, the country would detain them for no longer than six months, he said. The country would assist them in humanitarian terms and would allow them to stay here on a temporary basis.

"We will neither upgrade the problem to international level nor open refugee camps to accommodate them," he said.

"We have a clear position to help them on a humanitarian basis. As for the Rohingyas found on board boats in the sea, we will provide them with water and food but we will not allow them to enter Thai territory," he said.

Paradon said Thailand is not a target of Rohingyas, adding that their destination is Malaysia. "The Thai authorities have already talked and asked cooperation from Malaysia. We would like the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to help us talk to Malaysia," he said.

The Rohingyas are fleeing sectarian violence and ethnic cleansing in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

OIC envoys satisfied with Thailand's handling of Rohingya migrants

By English News

SONGKHLA, Jan 31 - Envoys from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries expressed satisfaction on Thailand's handling of Rohingya migrants as Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichachaikul led them to observe the Thai authorities' operations in the southern region today following the recent detentions of hundreds of the Myanmar ethnic minority.

The Thai foreign minister and 17 OIC diplomats visited a shelter for Rohingya people in Songkhla province this morning where they met 26 Rohingya women and 79 children.

Songkhla Governor Kritsada Boonrach reported that the health conditions of the Rohingya people have improved as they are being provided better care from concerned agencies.

The foreign envoys said they were satisfied with the situation and will determine whether the migrants should be sent back to their country of origin or onward to a third country.

The OIC diplomats also visited another group of Rohingya migrants who live in a shelter in Pattani province.

As the minister and his foreign guests visited a Rohingya shelter in Songkhla, local police here raided a camp suspected to illegally house about 200 Rohingya migrants.

Police however found no one there as the migrants were evacuated before the raid. They believe about two hundred Rohingya migrants had stayed at the camp for almost a month, waiting to depart for their next destination, Malaysia.

Meanwhile, local residents in Hat Yai district told police today that they rescued eight Rohingya migrants, all were found in fatigued condition as they had become lost in a rubber plantation.

Police believe the eight people were among the group of 200 Rohingya who stayed in an illegal camp and escaped from middleman during the evacuation. All now are being detained at the Sadao border crossing. (MCOT online news)

So many conflicting stories coming out of Thailand about these people. To many Thai chiefs all giving thier own private press conferences.

Everyone knows that the Rohingya were trafficked inside Thailand - navy, army, police, Thai plantation owners..whatever. Everyone knows. World humanitarian groups know, UNICEF knows, UNCR knows other NGOs know. Thailand is delaying the inevitable, that they will be setting up refugee camps and not permitted to just send them back to Burma. Thailand ahould be required to set up facilities fo them and do their part in helping the world. It is time for Thailand to ante up.

Of course they wont. This country is as selfish internationally as it people are internally. Absolutely inward focussed. Happy to grab whatever they can from others in the way of sex, labor or money and then discard people like rotten garbage. Says a lot about the ME ME ME society here.

why they don't charge them 500 baht per day of "unwelcomed" overstay ?

heck, they can work it off at 300 baht per day

oh no, i forgot, they need a work permit

It's great to see a compasionate Buddhist country demonstrating its values and beliefs!

Thailand cares nothing for non-Thais. Sorry, but that's been demonstrated over and over again. The inward looking self fixated social focus is masked by a culture that demands a public show of good manners and behaviour. Purely a veneer, which is becoming thinner and thinner.

The illegal and appalling trafficking and exploitation of these people will be swept under the carpet, no one will be punished. The international exposure to this means that the exploitation can't continue so the Rohingas have no use - simply an inconvient expense which must be got rid of as quickly as possible.

Let's give them jobs.

We need more workers !

Ridiculous post.

Any Thai with a business (including a farm or wanting a housekeeper) can get them working and staying papers.

Wake up. burp.gif

Two ridiculous posts. The Rohingya have no papers - you need a passport to get a work permit. Some of the slavery-type businesses (e.g. fisheries) would of course use them illegally if they could. Wouldn't surprise me if some of the refugees have already ended up there.

Wrong.

You do not need a passport to get a work permit.

I have had Burmese work for me/us and at the beginning they had NO identity papers at all.

By the time we are done they have all legal papers to live and work here.

Of course they are OUR responsibility and anything that they do we are responsible for.

Ex: Killing, stealing, you get the idea......

How would that work? Am I correct the Burmese workers you employ are not deemed Stateless by the Thai authorities, whereas the Rohingya are? Interested in your opinion on the process to legally employ Rohingya refugees in Thailand.

I am not sure how it works, but in my reading about foreign laborers, they keep talking about the issue of verification of nationality as a criteria. I don't think that's going to happen with the Rohyinga's.

This would be something that could only be talked about in person.

If'n ya know what I mean...............
