Steve2UK
No Barbara Streisand? No show tunes???? I'm gob smacked!!! BM - I used to have a small notice pinned up next to my record collection which read: "Please don't ask for a Barbra Streisand record - as a refusal often offends" Have to agree about the show tunes, though.......... and, OK, you've dragged ( ) it out of me - I do have "Barbra Streisand - The Broadway Album". Great CD. Edited February 28, 2006 by Steve2UK

jdinasia
sadly ... I doo have to admit to having liked Bronski Beat ... But the concept of "Gay Music"? I love Santana ... and Jeff Beck ... does that count? I watched a movie that had some Leon Russel in it yesterday ... wow!
PeaceBlondie
Yeah, I'm the dummy who was in the closet and didn't understand the whole Village People thing, and didn't spend my late nights raving and high in some gay disco. So I wouldn't know gay music. Well, we had this conversation on another thread, months ago. Guns'n'Roses are my favorite, even if Axl did write some gaybashing lyrics on a song I never heard. And CCR (please don't ask who they are, but here's a clue: John Fogarty).

PeaceBlondie
You know, Steven, I just thought that because CCR was one of my favorites, and I'm gay now, automatically CCR was gay music. I took a young man to a CCR concert in 1971, for whom I was really hot, but we didn't do anything - does that count?

I wonder why these postings were made. The only reason I can think of must be because someone lost the key to the Lego box. This does tend to make them rather over-exited. This does tend to make them rather over-exited. Understandable.. I couldn´t find my Lego box, apparently... Anyway, back on topic... I kind of like to play YMCA and a lot of other disco classics, when the bar is in the right mood, it can have a wonderful effect... Especially when the crown is thirty plus, and therefore the kind of tourism that will actually spend a buck (or have a buck to spend) whilst they are having a good time I know who CCR are, PB, but no way are they gay music! CCR are so gay.... Seriously, i dunno if they can be classified as gay music, but I don´t like their music much. Find it very overrated, and more precisly, too overplayed. The Dan Sai Kid
Does this thread refer togay music in the sense of being preffered by gay people, or being composed by gay people?
thaibebop
Does this thread refer togay music in the sense of being preffered by gay people, or being composed by gay people? That is what I would like to know. I think it would be better by far to discuss music written by Homosexuals, and then maybe discuss if the music was for the gay community or not and thus the impact the music had/has. Just an idea. TopChinese
Ok.. music written by homos... er.. that's Tchaikovsky? Elton John? KD Lang? Robbie Williams? I for one have always loved "Kissing a fool"... George was in his smouldering torch song phase there, love the video where he was caressing this donut dick of a mike. Pity I was too young then to realise how camp that was... Its funny how the classics of yesteryears take on a new meaning now that you're in the know. Anything by Pet Shop Boys are now suspect... PeaceBlondie
I'm the dummy who assumes that 'gay music' means music that for whatever reason, has been popular among gay men, especially in discotheques. Here a few months ago, the lyrics to "I Will Survive" were posted, and I didn't see anything gay about the words. As an anthem about survival, however, it resonated among the gay community and became an icon. Gay men, as musical composers, didn't write specific songs about homosexuality in the old days; it wouldn't have sold. It's kind of like my old neighbor who was Black, Christian, and almost surely gay - he wrote most of the lyrics for a successful heavy metal rock band, but he didn't obviously incorporate those three themes into his writing. Thomas_Merton
I'm the dummy who assumes that 'gay music' means music that for whatever reason, has been popular among gay men, especially in discotheques. If one is to consider the intentions of the OP, then PeaceBlondie's interpretation is correct. There is no point in discussing music written by Gays - or any art form for that matter. There could be some interest, however, in finding the great artists, in our time and in history, who weren’t gay. The few that there are. BTW, CCR’s “Put a Candle in the Window” is one of the greatest love songs ever written, IMHO.

PeaceBlondie
asanee, I don't know exactly what you're saying, but when I see album covers for Thai pop music, the young men look so cute that in the West, they'd be assumed to be gay. Not so in Thailand, I guess. My old Vietnamese boyfriend (age 26, looked 17) got off the airplane in Ho Chi Minh City, and when his teenaged niece and nephew saw him, they said right away, "Oh, you look SO gay!" And yes, he's a singer. Or as one of our Vietnamese neighbors said when I took Tien into the car repair place, "I know you; you are a songer!" Skipton
Diversity people there is no blueprint..but I think there are certain distinguishing musical indicators....For instance there was I happily listening to the Kaiser Chiefs and The Franz, then a certain someone released a song called Hung Up, then Sorry and reclaimed her crown after the American Life mishap...and we havnt stopped dancing since Edited March 7, 2006 by Skipton
boybrat
am rather surprised nobody mentioned DALIDA, tragic french chanteuse who killed herself after suffering from countless heartbreaks. she even has a place in france named after her called place dalida. i also know many many gay guys like me who also listen to etienne daho, kate bush, cocteau twins, etc. i kinda like ethereal-ish music. honestly have got no time for britney, celine, madge, and babs.and i absolutely abhor mariah. then there are gay groups/gay fronted groups like the punky pansy division, scissor sisters, erasure, indigo girls, marc almond, etc etc.they are quite alright, really. and i honestly didnt know that CREDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL is gay! it is? some of my favourite songs: kate bush: wuthering heights chicane: no ordinary morning carla bruni:quelqu'un m'a dit db boulevard: point of view...
