OP, just read as much as you can by as many different sources as possible, then MAKE YOUR OWN MIND UP. There are no definative writers on Thailand or anywhere else and anyone who claims otherwise is a liar or stupid.

Some of the lectures I have had to put up with on visa runs or simply trying to get from A to B have been astounding...

Sanitsuda Ekachai, also of the Bangkok Post, is well worth reading.

The characters and situations seemed totally unbelievable. If I remember correctly something about a car full of snakes and a luk kreung policeman, both of which I've never seen before in BKK.

Maybe not a car full of snakes - it is a fictional novel - but there are plenty of luk krueng working as policemen in Thailand.

+1. I'll agree with that. (Note to the new folks and the uninformed, which is who said writer preaches to -- from what I understand, 55555 is the Thai version of "hahahaha".)

yes, I hope it was a joke, cause he is definitely one of the worst...

Yeah, in the daily soap dramas.

OP, what you are looking for is considered dangerous and incendiary in Thailand and as someone correctly stated get too close for comfort to Art. 112.

Giles Ji Ungpakorn has been mentioned already. I am reading one of his books now. He is a self-proclaimed republican and a Marxist, so has his own radical views. He fled the country.

There are two other authors who I could recommend, but have been warned by the mods already to not link to any of their work.
