Just watched it - Phetchabun, Thailand.

Mate in Oz just watched it and a mate in England just watched it.

Too many copies to cope now.

Never mind.

It will add some extra US tourists this year though.

Win Win Thailand

All agree that it is not unfounded mockery. Interestingly, the skit and the subsequent hysteria make for a more penetrative form of truth-telling about Thailand's sex industry than the 'nudge-nudge wink-wink' treatment it usually recieves. As suggested by those before me, all Thai's truly offended by the skit should be down at the local authorities, police, MPs etc, banging on doors and demanding to know why the relevant laws are not being applied.

I must say, the prospect of Jon Stewart and his 'Daily Show' team stepping up to the plate on this story is mouth-watering to say the least. They would likely go beyond mere intimation and could really cause some seat squirming among Thai officialdom who've been brought up either to 'look the other way' or to 'get a piece of the action' when it comes to the illegal sex industry in Thailand.

The whole saga should be a rally cry to the short film makers and others in Thailand seeking a voice to decry corruption and environmental neglect in Thailand. Bring on the sequels.

I just sent an email to Jon and the Daily Show with the YouTube URL of the clip along with a copy and paste of the culture ministry nonsense demand it be removed. I doubt they pick up on it but one never knows.

Good move. I am also sending one to the Daily Show so maybe if they see more responses they will put something funny about Thailand also.

They have brought America to it's knees

Certainly it looked like that was about to happen during Obama's recent visit from the way Yingluck was coyly grinning and gazing into his eyes. laugh.png

I'm surprised that Obama didnt ask "is that for the whole night?" lol

Hilarious. I'm an American in America, and it's been removed from YouTube here, but with one search I watched it on another US news site. The video is funny, and true to some extent I'm sure. But it's only 1:30, and the direct insults to Thailand do not last very long. Overall it's a major overeaction by the Thai gov, but probably typical for Thailand. Pretend it's not real, sweep it under the rug. I think the upper crust/government Thais are the ones who want that reputation to go away, while the masses could probably care less (because they know it's true, and because they benefit from the sex trade).

For you non-Americans who might not be familiar with SNL, If you want a non-controversial SNL skit, try googline "more cowbell" and watching...funny stuff! The show is an American classic!

I'm in Phoenix, Arizona and it's 8:45 am on Feb. 5th.. just watched it for about the 10th time.. still funny. cheesy.gif

It seems that Germany threatened no legal action or demanded the removal of the video. That part conceded more education to Thais than they actually have. They can't tell apart Germans from Americans. They don't know that's different countries on different continents. They can't locate them on a world map. They're all Farangs from Farang country somewhere beyond Isaan. The average Thai 'lady' in Pattaya can't even find Thailand on a map, and would have no idea what the fuss is about.

It was never taken down at any point in time anywhere.

I think it was taken down temporarily as it was reported as spam but that's not unusual in many cases as far as know but as has been said many times it's definitely back up.

Anyone heard any statement from the culture minister or the ministry?

Some truth in that, though the average young Issan girl in the tourist spots is hardly representative. Mine recently told me that the tide comes in and because the Earth was spinning round. Categorically refused to believe it had anything to do with the moon, because it's "too far away". When I asked if the Earth was revolving at different speeds then, she didn't get it. And 'gravity', translated into Thai, meant nothing to her....

Well, it's now 8:49 am here in Thailand I did a search for "Rosetta Stone Thailand SNL" and there is was. Pretty funny. I want to extend my thanks to the Thai Ministry of Culture. Had they not called my attention to it, I'd never have seen it. I am sure that same is true for millions more.

I especially liked the "It's a joke, WHY SO SERIOUS?!!!!!!" which suggests that the producers knew in advance both something about Thai culture and how the Thai Culture nazis would respond. So they through out a pre-emptive, "Pood lin, tamai kri-at?" I guess the folks at the ministry did not get it. Somebody needs to remind them that it is another part of Thai culture to "have no serious, have cool heart, never mind, everything okay." At least this is what they teach their kids. Somebody at the Ministry must have cut school a lot.

Believe that is an alternate copy put together based on the 'noise' from the original. The original YouTube vid had no subtitling. Once on the Internet it is there forever. wink.png

The clip is still available to view.

The Thai Govts propoganda machine reminds of the good old Iraqi Information Minister back in 93.

"We've forced the Americans to retreat" lol

They tell the people it has gone and they kicked U.S arse and the public believe them.

The Thai person in that position as Yingluck's Government Spokesman in Thailand also has an interesting and coincidental name,

Tossa-porn Ser-irak

.
