Hi all,

I’ve just checked my TCT status and I’m good until September 2013. My contract with the school runs until 25th of May. Pretty soon I’ll have to make a decision how to continue.

I know that I’ll have to renew my work permit first, then Immigration. I guess a work permit will only be issued until my waiver runs out, am I right?

Will the Immigration issue a visa until September this year, or do I have chances to get a one year visa?

I also have to renew my passport soon, as there’s only space for one more stamp, just in case if I’d have to leave the country for whatever reason.

Should I apply for a new waiver now, (I’m on my first), or should I just continue and do it let’s say beginning of August to submit my documents to the TCT?

Any useful input is more than welcome, I could definitely use my “passport renewing” trip to visit the TCT. Thanks a lot in advance! ----wai2.gif

Unfortunately, I only have bad news as far as getting another waiver is concerned. The two easiest avenues for further extensions (I'm on my 3rd & getting ready to apply for a 4th) are taking the TCT tests or taking the Thai Culture Course.

The next round of tests are scheduled for early May, but the deadline for signing up to take the tests was the 31st of January.

As far as the Thai Culture Course, I heard that it is current suspended, pending review by the TCT (the want to make it more difficult and more expensive).

So, unless I'm mistaken, the only other way to get another extension would be to sign up for some Education related course at some Thai University's International Program & then throw yourself at the TCT's mercy.

Good Luck.

Thanks! I've got my Thai culture awareness course, was free when I'd worked for an agency. The course was held in Kanchanaburi, when some Professors showed up and taught us the difference between Somtham Laos and Thai style and other useful knowledge for a guy living here constantly for ten years..

Wouldn't this certificate be enough?

Thought wouldn't be a problem to apply for the second? I'm teaching here now for almost eight years and our director has got some good connections to TCT.

A friend of mine had just received his second waiver without any problems. Guess I need a beer now first, I'm confused.---biggrin.png

I do have a degree, but not specifically in education. The one I'm holding is in social pedagogy. But it's not in English, therefore I had to have it translated into Thai last time I'd applied.

Should i go for a new one now, or just apply for the period of time my waiver's okay until September this year? Thanks for any other information, would be deeply appreciated.--wai.gif

As far as know the only accredited culture course is from Suan Dusit Rajapat. Why is your degree not English? If you are not a Native Speaker you will also need to take a TOIEC.

I grew up in a bilingual environment, using English and German from earliest childhood on. I went to a German university and studied social pedagogy. Honestly, I don't mind doing another Thai culture course, but shouldn't mine be okay?

Seems to be an accredited course, held by some guys from MoE. Well, i could ask my agency, if that works, or not.

My point being is: Should I continue on my waiver letter, which would get me until September and then apply for a new provisional TL?

Or would it make more sense to apply for a new provisional TL now? I guess there wouldn't be a problem until September. I'll also have to move into another house, eventually in another province, right after school's closing, seems to be a very busy summer for me.wai.gif

The TCT has a list of approved institutions for the cultural course.

Thanks a lot Mario. Should i continue on my still good until September waiver, ( My contract and visa're good until May 25th,) or could it be a problem to extend visa and work permit? Wouldn't it be easy to receive an extension of wp and visa until September?

The other option would be to apply for a new provisional TL now. What's your suggestion, you're the professional on this forum. Thanks a lot in advance.

I suspect that only Immigration can give you a definitive answer to this question. However, last year my contract expired in December, but my visa was supposed to be good until the following August. I was given 4 months upon renewal and then, after I got a new passport, it was extended for another 8 months.

Immigration MAY do the same with a TL that doesn't last a full year, but then again they may not.

Thanks a lot. Seems applying for the fourth is a different ballgame. Guess I'm not the only one in a similar situation. --wai2.gif

You're in an almost identical situation to myself SirChai. As my current waiver also expires in September, but I need to renew my work permit + visa before the end of April (Although I'll probably try to do it in March, as one of our new teachers needs to do his before mid/late March).

For myself, it's my intention to probably not renew my waiver until August or September (Or maybe later if I get issued a full 1 year visa/work permit.). As at present I've sat 2 exams, although didn't pass either of them, which is what a friend said was all that was required (That I show like I'm making an effort). However I'm scheduled in for 4x exams in May, and am hoping to do my culture course in the next few months as well (I was ment to do it last weekend, but they cancelled the course because of the TCT).

Please advise me with what you end up doing, as well as immigration/TCT's response.

Labour will likely give you a renewal until the expiration date of your employment contract. However, Immigration most likely will give you an extension of the permission of temporary stay until the expiration date of your TCT Provisional Teaching Permit.

The requirements of the provisional teaching permit has provisions for two provisional teaching permits only. Although teachers are reporting that they got their third or fourth provisional teaching permit, last week a colleague of mine was refused a third provisional teaching permit despite writing the tenth TCT Professional Knowledge Test and having sat the Thai Culture Course.

I would like to advise you to go for your new provisional teaching permit as soon as possible. It will save you 1,900 THB for an extra extension.

Thanks a lot for your useful information. I'll take our Thai head teacher to the labour department next week to hear their opinion. They're usually pretty helpful.

When I started in 2005, I payed 500 baht for my teacher's license, sent all my docs off to Bangkok, but then they'd changed the laws and nothing happened.

I'm certainly on my first and will eventually try to enroll at a Thai university on weekends. Don't think the life experience would be a better option.

Wish you all a good time...---wai2.gif

^ Best of luck.

Thanks and greetings from lower northeast. Checked my status again and all in a sudden, the date was changed by TCT!!

Provisional was good until September 17, now "just" to June this year. So, I'll go for it. Good weekend to all.--biggrin.png .
