Honda to spend $644 million on Thai expansion

TOKYO, Feb 6, 2013 (AFP) - Honda on Wednesday announced plans to spend about $644 million on building a new car plant in Thailand and expanding an existing factory as part of its bid to boost production in the country.

Japan's third largest automaker said that its Thai subsidiary would build the new factory in Prachinburi province, about 120 kilometres (74 miles) east of Bangkok, at a cost of 17.15 billion baht ($575 million).

With production capacity of 120,000 vehicles annually, the plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2015 with initial plans to hire some 1,200 employees, Honda said.

The automaker said it would mainly produce small and sub-compact sized vehicles at the plant in response to growing global demand.

Honda separately said its Thai unit had finished expanding production at its Ayutthaya plant from 240,000 vehicles a year to 280,000.

It now planned to boost that figure to 300,000 units in 2014, at a cost of about 2.03 billion baht.

That would bring the automaker's combined annual output capacity in Thailand to 420,000 vehicles in 2015, including output from the new plant.

Of course, of course, due to the billion-trillion Baht success of Thailand's First car scheme, many Japanese car companies, are "ON THE ATTACK MODE NOW", in order to get compensated for the 2011 floods...

Company like Honda is the reason why you have to pay 200 or 300% tax on European or American cars

Can you please explain that logic to me? Not only are Honda assembled here but also many European brands including Volvo and Benz to name just two!!! Good idea through, stop knocking the Thai's and pick on the Japanese for a change, one day TV posters will rule the world - then God help uswub.png

japanese car makers bribing Thai government,so they keep the tax for European and Amerian cars astronomic high,in thailand only khun hiso can afford to buy a Golf or Chrysler not to talk about a Benz..,besides that Japanese cars not really cheap here, for example a Toyata Camry starts in the USA around 23000$,here not under 30000$.Also thanks to Japanese car makers and Thai government you can buy only a few models here in Thailand,When i was in Europe last yr I was amazed how many different models of Toyota drive around ,hmm just by the way have a look how much does a benz cost in thailand, and then have a look how much does it cost in Europe or USA

Or it could be because of the China / Japan disputes.

Waiting for the legions of TV posters who foretold the imminent doom of Thai industry after the floods, with foreign companies predicted to leave in droves, to post their retractions...

They don't typically post in the "good news" threads.

All the whinging about availability is ridiculous. The cars manufactured here are mostly exported and Thailand is not a priority market as there are far larger markets to supply to and you'll find the higher costs of cars are not the margins from the manufacturers, it is the dealers and the Government taxes.

So I am a whinging, rediculous poster, Ha Ha, only stating a fact about trying to order an eco car. The rest you posted is true.

Also go into Udon and try to get the 70% reduction off goods, Central/Robinson....sorry for whinging again.

Happy here but allowed to whinge.

In the mid-1980s, I recall Honda dealers in the U.S. with showrooms empty, selling cars from brochure pictures, with a 5-month waiting list. This situation lasted for nearly a year, while sales (and prices) just kept rising.

Did you make this story up all by yourself or did you read it somewhere? I would be interested in seeing who would write such stuff so if you have a link post it. Thanks.smile.png
