Pitak Siam leaders hear, reject police charges

BANGKOK, Feb 13 - Anti-government Pitak Siam group leader Gen Boonlert Kaewprasit and nine other protest leaders today rejected all charges after reporting to the police to acknowledge charges of violations of the security law.

Retired Gen Boonlert, along with nine leading members of the Pitak Siam group, appeared at police headquarters after being accused of violating the newsjsInternal Security Act (ISA) as they rallied against the government at the Royal Plaza Nov 24 last year.

The government imposed the Internal Security Act to maintain law and order in three districts of Bangkok but the rally ended in early hours after confrontations with police and less-than-expected protester numbers.

Another leading member was absent today, saying he is under medical treatment and will acknowledge charges on Feb 28.

The retired general said he was unperturbed with the charges and was willing to fight the case with evidence which he had earlier submitted to the police.

He insisted that the November protest was peaceful and unarmed.

All ten accused pleaded not guilty of all charges and said they would submit their written statements to police within 30 days.

One of the accused, Tul Sitthisongwong, challenged police investigators to review the case as the Constitution Court earlier ruled that the Pitak Siam protest was peaceful and the protesters were unarmed.

Deputy Metropolitan Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Anuchai Lekbamrung, said police investigators have thoroughly reviewed all legal aspects and concluded that there are sufficient grounds to proceed with the case. (MCOT online news)

They reject/ dispute the content/ accusations of the charges but are formaly recuired to attend the police station in person to acknowledge that the have been filed.

It does look like a funny sentence out of context but it does make perfect sense if you know what they're talking about.

I wonder how I would go back in my country by telling the police I reject their charges against me if I had done something they wanted to prosecute me over. But then this is also just another political storm in a teacup which as already stated, is simply Thainess...

To simplify it.

It is like acknowledging the gun being held to your head while you deny the reasons for it being held to your head.thumbsup.gif
