SATTAHIP: -- The owner of a factory which produces animal cages recorded a transaction involving 4 men who claimed to be Local Government Officials who required protection money paid monthly as the factory employed illegal immigrants.

newsjs

One month ago the men conducted a raid of the factory, owned by Khun Nongnuch aged 42, and detained 12 illegal foreign immigrants.

Discussions between the owner and the men took place and they required a payment of 1,500 Baht per person to clear the case and avoid further prosecution.

This price was discounted to 15,000 Baht which was paid-over to the men.

They promised to return one month later to collect an agreed amount of 5,000 Baht per month so the workers could continue at the factory unhindered.

Ok, everyone settle down. Chalerm will be along shortly with some reassurance that, because this happened mid-afternoon on a rainy weekday and one of the guys was wearing white underwear this cannot be construed as extortion (or a bribe).

there is no problem for that .... Chinese new year holiday end tomorrow ..... for next month , they will find another holiday to justify the money.

Not really.. Chinese New Year festivities last for 2 week, till the Lantern Festival aka Chinese Valentine's Day..

Isn't there a 365 day Chinese New Year for extortion here?

What a poor piece of reporting.

Were the men officials or just pretend ones ? where are the four men in the photos ? and is anyone going to take action ? All unanswered by the reporter, is this really news especially as bribery is ok according to Government.

Ah Pattaya , Corrupt one day More corrupt the next

Of course there's no corruption in Britain , USA or Australia ...right ????

Judge Not

Only difference is its not at such a low level, but the sums involved in corruption in the UK and USA are colossal compared to Thailand, you only have to look at the amounts the governments steal from the proles in taxation and distribute amongst themselves to see this.

At least Thai corruption is far more democratic than, say, Australia. Even low level officials here can join in the corruption game, whereas is most western countries corruption is only an option for the already wealthy.
