Issuance of fake IDs to Thais on the rise

BANGKOK, Feb 14 – Thailand's Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has reported increasing numbers of Thais are acquiring counterfeit ID cards, mainly persons who are involved in criminal activities.

newsjsDSI Director General Tarit Pengdith said Thais who own fake ID cards are either implicated in criminal cases or on the run. He cited the recent case of former politician Somchai Khunpluem, better known as Kamnan Poh, who was arrested after having fled years ago.

Some miscreants put their names in house registrations of the deceased to use their names in applying for ID cards while some simply duplicated others’ names, he said.

Mr Tarit said investigations in Wiang Haeng district of Chiang Mai province found the issuance of 18,587 fake ID cards to Thai citizens in 2008-2009. (MCOT online news)

Wow, that's over half of the population.

Ok..... and? Nothing on the Govt officials that has been issuing these fake ID cards.

Is Mr Tarit sure there were not only 18,586 ID cards faked? Taking the time and process of producing these, it makes approx. 45 cards per working day. They must have secret prints running in the forests which might explain the ongoing haze!

18,587 fake ID Cards issued in a 2 year period, and this is only taking into account 1 district in 1 province!!! It would be interesting to know what the nationwide figure is!!! If the practice is as common in all other districts, I wouldn't be surprised if the fake ID's were out numbering the genuine ones!

When a Thai woman leaves the bar owing money the bar will take the ID as guarantee she will come back and pay the bill. Hence the need for so many ID cards.

This reported number of fakes is 3 plus years old, what about the number since then? No wonder they had such a delay get legit cards to the people, they were running at capacity turning out fakes.

If the various investigative groups were half as effecient as those they are trying to catch in ilegal activity, the gazillions the politicans want to spend, could go for a single project. A wall around a designated 1/4 of Thailand, just to house prisoners. They could forget the budget for police stations/barricks, as well as upkeep, salaries, perks, etc for the majority of the so called, civil service, police, politicans, etc. They would all be in the new jail or in exile, outside the country.

Maybe, in fact, they were all issued over Chinese new year - when you're allowed to break the law because it's the culture.

So you can't trust the Thai politicians, or the Thai police or even the Thai government officials.

Thank god for the farangs!

even more prevent are fake insurance and registration stickers

Hey Chief, look no further thna you own people and others than man the counters

in all governments departments, those are the culprits you want, without them

being in on it, it would have been difficult to issue those fake card,,
