Making A Key For Honda Civic That Has Chip

I recently asked about getting a spare key for a 2013 Honda Civic. While I'm no locksmith, it appeared to me that the key requires a laser to make. It's cut on both sides to a certain depth. A Honda salesman told me any locksmith could make the key. I have to question that.

I have the belief the key requires some information from Honda either with a code or possibly Honda even sending a blank key to the dealer.

Certainly the key needs a chip which is compatible with whatever car I have.

Anyone have experience with this as to what's required to get a spare key and how many baht it takes?

I'm looking to buy the car and I don't already own the Civic.

I was quoted 4000 Baht for the spare key with chip for Audi....don't know about Civic...

I'm still wondering if a regular locksmith can make a copy of what looks to me to be a fairly substantial key. Could he make the copy with a Honda Civic blank with whatever equipment he has?

There are two key types. The master electronic one and the valet key (no electronics). The valet key can be done by a locksmith but the other has to be ordered unless he has the specialized coding machine. If a problem with getting the dealership to work this out, check with another dealership. If the sales person doesn't have a clue, then go to the repair center manager and ask him.

Calling the dealers (two of them) hasn't gotten us a clear and final answer as yet. I never imagined getting a couple of extra keys would be so hard for them. A salesman actually let us walk yesterday because of his not wanting to get the price and availability of two keys. It was a done deal if not for the keys. He said he'd call us today with information but the day has come and gone and no phone call from him. Sure surprised me.

I wanted a new metal blank ignition key cut for my Ranger for use with the new non- OEM alarm/remote start key fob. It's one of those 'laser cut' double-sided jobs and he had the machine and cut a working spare for me. He was asking me if I wanted the alarm/remote fob 'chipped' to match the original Ford key which I declined as I eventually want to use the alarm/remote coding rather than the Ford coding once the alarm gets installed (or let the alarm installer do the key mix and matching). He offered to do both non- OEM fobs for 1800 baht and showed me the coding machine and chips. This was just your standard key cutting kiosk in the walkway to a Big C and not any specialised alarm shop or dealership. Sometimes it pays to check out the easiest or least viable options first.

Had one done for a few years ago for a 2007 Vigo. Went to the lock guy in the basement of Robinsons Asok as he had all the blanks. He cut the key and arranged for a guy to come with his laptop and do the recoding. Was under 3000 Baht from memory and all done on the same day. So probably not as hard as it sounds.

TGF called four dealers and got three different answers.

The duplicate answers were to just have any street corner locksmith cut a key.

Information is not easy to get in LOS. At least reliable information, that is.

the reason given for dealers to not make the key was the workers could make an extra key for themselves. They can't be trusted according to what the TGF was told.

Just came across this video. It shows re-programming the new key in the car itself.

Thanks and that's close but not quite a cigar for you.

WE ended up calling a total of 7 dealers and got five (?) different answers as to how to get an additional key. It's probably an issue of a Thai person not being able to imagine the future as in why are you asking if you don't already own the car.

This is one of the two keys we were given. I show both sides of the key and remote. WE've gotten a price quote from ฿2017. to just under 10,000 fro a duplicate of the key and remote

Correct information in LOS is priceless, indeed.

I couldn't agree with you more "NanLaew" that's why I started the thread so those of us involved or who have had the same experience can share information.

As an aside, both our keys are are housed in a remote so I don't think we even have a "valet" key. I'm not really sure how we could use one however. If we leave the car for service, they have to have the key with the chip which also opens the truck. Maybe I'm missing something here. The car requires the key nearby with a chip to start it with the start button.
