Apparently there are 11 one-stop centers in Thailand where alien workers can register; not only from Myanmar, but also other surrounding Asian countries. According to the Thai government (I am quoting from a recent newspaper article) these centers have the capacity to register 500 to 1000 migrant workers per day. Also all these centers have representatives of the foreign country to assist. The cost to the Thai government for the worker for all the documentation to stay and work legally in Thailand is 3,500 Baht. As most workers do not know the way to obtain said license they resort to brokers who charge them as much as 15,000 Baht. Which I feel is extortion level, especially taking into consideration the monthly wage level of most of these workers.

Does anybody have knowledge as where the center is in Chiang Mai and/or any broker that might be able to do the paperwork and assist for a more reasonable fee?

On the Mae Rim Road: coming from the middle ringroad turn left onto the Mae Rim Road once you reach the t-section at Provincial house. So you are then heading back to town.

Don't pin me on it, but it's approximately 500 meters from this t-section on your left. Big blue signboard saying "khon Thang Dao" in Thai.

I went there myself and asked what was needed. But I speak Thai ... sort-of. They were very helpful.

There is a booklet for what is needed mostly in Thai, but with English translation.

Strange you should mention this...... Just got back from the center about 15 minutes ago. If you know where the govt center is aka City Hall, it is on the west side of the Maerim Road, ..... the alien center is on the east side of the highway across from the real city hall.

If you were going west on the ring road coming from Meechok Plaza and were approaching city hall , you would have to make a decision either to go thru the underpass and into the city hall complex, or exit the ring road to the left just before going under. Esit to the left. This would put you at the stoplight on Maerim Rd , facing west and looking directly in the city hall complex. At this light make a left turn going south on Maerim Rd. and just 300 - 400 metres on your left look for about a thousand motorcycles and a group of 2000 alien workers. You cannot miss it.

Yes the broker fee is way out of line for my way of thinking. But is rational to the Thai Gov't offical mind as it is just another way of creating income with little effort. Very much like a couple months ago, where this govt group wanted the alien passport holders to pay 1000 baht to change the color of the cover from red to blue...apparently the same level genius as the creator of the 2 baht coin.

Keep this in mind....... the alien workers are here seeking a better way of life for themselves and their families, and are willing to worik very hard for it.......... too many others here are also seeking a better way of life for themselves, but are not interested in working hard for it. I am beginning to believe its genetic in these parts...... Opening sentence from the local job seeker "How much does the job pay and when are the holidays."

Good luck
