New 500 Thb Bank Note?

elektrified

Recommended Posts

Got a 500 THB Bank Note in change today at the Post Office. Looks unlike anything I have ever had. Very light purple and white background, has the water-mark but no silver foil. Don't see a date. The layout of images and so forth is quite unusual. It's a new bill, very crisp. I asked the guys at the P.O. if it was legit and they laughed and said of course it is legit. I just perused the Internet of websites showing Thai Baht bills and don't see anything like it or any of the signatures look close to any of the examples on-line. What am I missing here? A new bill or a NOS old bill or commemorative edition? I believe it is illegal to scan and post on-line so I won't bother with that.

Pictures or it didn't happen :P

No foil indicates an older bill. Every Thai banknote ever made is still valid as of this day.

Look here for all the series (left hand side menu) and see if you can find yours. 14th is the last one without a foil strip, 13th has a white border.

Thanks for the link. I missed that website before.

It was issued in 1996 and looks as though it has never seen the light of day before.

Case closed.

Thanks guys.

OK, I'll try this one for my next coffee break!

Seen as though I saw that one in a "museum" recently (not to mention it's issued April 1st) would think that it's value would be purely novelty.

The one hundred tical note (Types I and II) was issued as part of the First Banknote Series. Printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co. in London. Type I had serial numbers running to 57000 and Type II to 43000. Aside from Thai and English, Chinese and Malay scripts were used in the rectangles on either side.

Real currency, not a novelty. Uncirculated or Extra fine examples now have a catalogue value running from Baht 300,000 to Baht 700,000.

This poorer quality example sold in Bangkok for Baht 140,000 in December.

I received a News Flash email form Thai Visa News 4 mins ago, with a headline of " New 500 THB bank note - here’s how it looks like ".

Only to read that the OP said " It was issued in 1996 " <deleted> ?

It must be time for a coffee coffee1.gif

The post actually started as " New 500 Thb Bank Note?". The clue to the post being a query is the "?" ! :0)

The email news Headline did not have a ? question mark. The email News Headline did not have the post title, it stated clearly "New 500 THB bank note - here’s how it looks like"

Just saying, anyway, it wont change the price of cheese !!!

What you are referring to is not factually correct.

Just a way to get hits to a nothing thread I presume, horses for courses eh. wai.gif

If it is illegal to scan or reproduce by other means, Thai currency, which it is, then isn't Thaivisa.com in serious breach of the law by publishing, ie distributing, those reproductions?

There are numerous sites, including eBay, local currency dealers, Bangkok auctions, etc as well as books published all showing Thai banknotes.

Even the Bank of Thailand has a complete set of notes on the Internet: http://www.bot.or.th/English/Banknotes/HistoryANdSeriesOfBanknotes/Pages/Banknote_Series15.aspx

It's illegal to reproduce a note in an attempt to pass it off as genuine currency.

A photo might help.

I read it is illegal to scan and post images of Thai currency.

SERIOUSLY? I see idiots (Thais) doing this all the time on FESS BOOOK! You'd think they'd know their own laws... oh wait. How stupid of me. Of course not!

Can someone provide a link to the law that EXPLICITLY states this?? I'd love to administer some anti-idiot vaccine online.

Oh wait... SCANs are one thing... how about pictures??

THANK YOU!

HEY! I just realised that the money my wife's folks gave me on our wedding is... SERIES 9 stuff! http://www.bot.or.th/English/Banknotes/HistoryANdSeriesOfBanknotes/Pages/Banknote_Series09.aspx

Any idea how much this is worth? Just wondering... I'm not thinking of giving it away (or selling it... just yet). But man -- these were is PERFECT condition (until they were folded up as flowers *sigh* -- the paper is still crisp and firm. I got a 10, 20 and 100 bill. Darn... to think these were just normal bills (I only noticed what they were when we were putting away things for the flood in 2011)!

Whoa. I think I'll wait another decade or two then, thanks! PS. The ones I have seem to be in better condition than that ...
