100 Foods You Should Eat Before You Die, The Omnivore Project, How Are You Doing?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Well this is just for fun, I reckon. The idea is pretty clear. There is this list of foods you are "supposed" to eat before you die. I've included the base list to copy and paste, and the list showing my progress. I was a little conservative in my claims, there are a few cases where I might have tried the food but not certain so didn't claim those.

http://www.omnivore100project.com/what-is-the-omnivores-100/

The base list. If you want to play, copy and paste the base list and make your claims by formatting the ones you've tried with something different and/or adding an indicator as I did. I just used Y for YES.

BTW, overall I think this is a pretty good list but obviously it's culturally biased towards westerners. Also there are some of things I've never heard of. I like the idea of learning about interesting new foods I've never tried or even heard of.

I'm a little embarrassed about some of those I couldn't tick. For example, steak tartare. I'm paranoid about raw beef. Also sweetbreads. I know they must taste great but the idea grosses me out. Clearly many more have tried horse without knowing it.

Ok, I'll bite....at first glance was surprised I've tried quite a number in the list. So here goes

1. Crocodile

2. Black pudding

3.. Cheese fondue

4. Baba ghanoush

5. Calamari

6. Pho

7. PB&J sandwich

8. Aloo gobi

9. Fruit wine made from something other than grapes

10. Steamed pork buns

11. Pistachio ice cream

12. Fresh wild berries

13. Foie gras :licklips:

14. Rice and beans (not sure if this is a specific dish, or just any kind of rice with any kind of beans?)

15. Dulce de leche

16. Oysters

17. Baklava

18. Wasabi peas

Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl (not in sourdough bowl though, so not counting this one :( )

19. Salted lassi

20. Sauerkraut

21. Root beer float

22. Cognac with a fat cigar (ok I'm cheating, it was a thin cigar)

23. Clotted cream tea

25. Malt whisky from a bottle worth £60/$120 or more

26. Chicken tikka masala

27. Eel

28. Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut

29. Abalone

30.Paneer

31. Spaetzle

Carob chips (not chips, but the liquid form of it. Claimed to be a chocolate substitute. Doesn't work for me

Durian - trying to forget I tried the preserved version, so not counting this either

32. Frogs’ legs

33. Haggis

34. Gazpacho

35. Snail

36. Bellini

37. Tom yum

38. Eggs Benedict

Getting to the end of the list, have to say while I've tried the above, can't claim to have enjoyed all of them

How come Poutain made the list and Arbroath Smokie misses out?

Anyway I have tried both.

JT....get some spicy black pudding....your life will not be complete until you taste this.

Number 99 on the list Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee I found some in the Central Market in Adelaide selling for something like AU$ 200 a kilo w00t.gif and they will apparently do you a freshly ground single shot espresso for something like AU$ 20 a cup neddless to say I passed or was that passed out ?

You missed too many things, Jinthing, you have a way to go…

Horse is a perfect meet... Kobe beef is very special and you can get it in Pattaya (at Bruno’s)... Crocodile and snake just are perfectly tasty and soft when cooked well by Chinese, I enjoyed it while in SF... steak tartare is great when spicy with some cognac but requires perfect filet mignon to make... truffle (black and white) give the pasta just the perfect finish... single malts are my favourites and yes, I do have some pretty expensive bottles, the most expensive is my birthday bottle (1960 Strathisla Speyside at around 400 GB£)

You should keep a low profile on this thread my prickly friend!

Why is that then Smoke.

Isn't my choice of cuisine high brow enough.

Surprised that I had eaten most on the original list. Was surprised that 'Pocky' was included, had to press the link in case it was some exotic food that I was unaware of, but no it was standard 'Pocky'. Yes have eaten it.

Glad 'Monkey Brains' not included in Chinese list, have been offered it a few times in HKG but always declined. I do eat animal meat but that is going too far. (imho)

Lightly sauteed lambs brains are a bit of an Arab delicacy, too.

They probably think it makes them more cleverer, like.
