Garmin Gps Taking Me Out Of The Way

Featured Replies

My Garmin Nuvi 1350 GPS that works ok at home is literally driving me crazy here in LOS. Im just trying to get from my condo to a local hospital which is less than 2km away. If I try to follow the route my Nuvi wants me to go, it will take me 3 hours and will endlessly recalculate until i have to turn it off.

I have the SE Asia maps loaded. In addition I have tried to set it for both shorter distance and faster time to no avail. It shouldnt be that difficult for a dedicated GPS to do should it?

I have the latest Thai Street Maps on my Nuvi. Routing works well.

there is a map available through eagle gps, Chiang mai, this gps shop in Chiang Mai has them , if you can load it on your system it works a treat.

i loaded it onto my garmin Montana , disabled the S.E. ASIA map and all of a sudden the machine is brilliant.

i rode from ubon to chiang mai, had the map loaded as i was not satisfied with the original maps performance, and then toured around for a week , on my return to ubon the new make took me a completely different route and shaved 150 km's off my trip.

Thanks for the replies.

Wimpy - where did you buy or download that Thai Street Maps? I did a google search and couldnt find it.

Moose - I will try that shop, hope it works on my Nuvi. I still use this Nuvi on both continents, so I hope it wont overwrite anything from my home map.

I believe that is the map Eagle is selling.

Garmin's South East Asia maps stink as well and their support. What is good about Garmin GPS units is that the ESRI TSM map works great. I too wasted the money buying the Garmin SEA map.

Thanks for the replies.

Thailand Street Maps (TSM v.2012.40) is available from Eagle GPS, Chiang Mai or direct from the manufacturer in Bangkok, GPS Society. Eagle GPS @ http://www.eaglegps.co.th/index.php/lang-en/maps or GPS Society @ http://www.gpssociety.com/EN/Pages/map.aspx.

loading extra maps on my Montana does not overwrite the other one , you can enable or disable the maps at will, use control panel on device, i have a dedicated australian map as well as SE ASIA and the aforementioned one i purchased from eagle , and just use the appropriate map for the country i am in .

I have the latest Thai Street Maps on my Nuvi. Routing works well.

I have TSM V.12 from ESRI and it's not as good as my old V9.0 from Bulgaria! Takes me straight past my hotel, that is served by a U turn, round a very busy loop that takes 15 to 20 minutes to negotiate, due to traffic. Will do similar tricks to other places and ignores the ring road around Korat too.

By chance, you don't have your GPS set to avoid u-turns do you?

The latest map is version 12.4. Version 12.0 is pretty old. Yes, it sounds like you may have U turns set to avoid.

I also use the Garmin SEA chip in my NUVI when I travel in LOS. My GPS sometimes takes me out of the way at times. I am suspecting that the release I have (not sure what issue) is programmed for driving on the RIGHT side of the road. It often tries to direct me around the block or many kilometers past where I want to go so I can make a u-turn to get on the other side of a divided road. I have been surprised many times to find my destination in short distance on the left side of the road where I can easily turn into the address! If sometimes I follow the directions through all the crazy turns, I will arrive at my destination find I am on the wrong side of a divided road or highway! bah.gif

Thanks for all the tips.

I have used Garmins in several countries. I had the same issue in the middle east. It has something to do with the maps they were loaded and being used. As an example I has DESERT KSA loaded and GCC MAPS loaded. Different maps but for same region. You can go back in the menu and disable one of the maps. I had same issue. The GPS would say trip time 2 hrs when I knew it was 10 mins. After setting up with one map all was normal.

Sounds like I'll stay with my iphone navigation then. It has its disadvantages but gets me there now that I have mastered the idiosyncratic workings of the that sent me mad at the beginning.

Garmin nuvi 40, as most nuvi models, will handle only one map at a time. When you try to set it up for more than that, you will run into trouble.

Having different maps on separate memory cards is an easy way to do it. That avoids overwriting maps that you want to keep. Memory cards are now very cheap so there is no reason why you can't have several of them.

Hi again. Before i go out and update my maps with Thailand Street Maps, Im thinking about just buying a whole new GPS with Thailand maps installed already. My Garmin 1350 is showing its age a little bit, and if it isnt that much more expensive, I might just opt for a new one. The Thailand Street Maps looks like it costs 2000 baht, but Im not sure how much a new GPS preloaded with Thailand maps would cost. I once looked in Carrefour which is now Big C and the cheapest GPS they had was around 5000 baht but that was a few years ago. I might head over to Panthip and see what they have there.

Garmin 40 will cost you THB 3990.00 complete with TSM 2012.40 map. Be sure to get the English version map installed.

Thanks IO. Do you know if that would in include any maps for Europe or North America?

Thailand version of the Garmin 40 includes Thailand map only. You can get microSD card versions of other maps anywhere.

Thanks for the information.

I recently purchased a Garmin 2565 from Eagle with TM 2012.40 maps installed and find that the navigation is lacking. The last time I used it to navigate to Swampy airport it directed me west by several klics from a known route. Simple routing from east Bangkok to downtown also routes via the heavy traffic even with avoid traffic engaged. I find this a waste of money so far. Maybe more usage will change my mind.

If you go into navigation options, you will be able to choose the shortest or fastest route. The shortest route option will likely take you through smaller and maybe busier streets. The fastest route may be further but is safer to use in Bangkok. I often use the shortest route just to see where it takes me. The best part is that it has never allowed me to get lost.

You will eventually learn what works best for you. I frequently make trips between Loei and Jomtien. Sometimes I like to use route 304 through the mountains so I use the shortest route to Kabinburi and from there, the shortest route to home or Jomtien depending which destination I am going to. Going the same route all the time is just too boring.

You can also sit down at your computer and pick a route that you would like to try, then program that route into your GPS and save it. I find that once in a while it wants to route me on a road that doesn't look too good. I then use the detour option and it will re-route me from that spot. When the red shirts and yellow shirts were causing all sorts of problems I was going from Loei to Chiang Rai. One of the idiot groups had the major highways blocked. I was VERY happy to have the detour option because without that option I would have been totally lost out in the boonies.

I'm also a bit paranoid and careful so I carry a hand held GPS in the glove compartment in case the Nuvi packs it in. That's never happened but one never knows.

It would help if people just downloaded the Owner's Manual that is provided for your Garmin. Read the manual completely before you ask a question. Most of the troubles reported on this Topic refer to u-turn avoidance, map selection, and shortest or fastest route. The manual is not the most detailed, but gives you the general idea of what to look for.

Gary A - Can you tell me what software you use on your computer to plan routes, etc. I bought the Thailand Street Maps (TSM v.2012.40) from Eagle in Panthip, and when I use Mapsource, it doent seem to be able to give me a street map of Thailand, just a blank page with some of my waypoints that i transferred from my GPS. And it doesnt include the TSM in the "manage map products" screen.

Your Garmin 1350 has routes = "0", check the specs. It does have 1000 waypoints/favorites/locations for you to use for trip planing.
