Abundant fruit supply may cause prices to dip
By English News

13629790526100-640x390x2.jpg

CHANTHABURI, March 11 - The fruit harvest in this eastern province has risen substantially this year due to good weather conditions, which may cause fluctuations in market prices.

Chanthaburi Provincial Agricultural Extension Office assistant chief Piya Pokket said durian, rambutan, mangosteen and long kong are already on the market, for it is their harvest season.

According to the abundant yield, durian has increased by more than 10,000 tonnes compared to the same period last year, making it 217,000 tonnes this year.

The mangosteen harvest was 82,000 tonnes this year, 13,000 tonnes higher than last year, while long kong yielded 49,000 tonnes, an increase of 5,000 tonnes year-on-year.

Rambutan was the only fruit with the same harvest yield as last year at 140,000 tonnes.

Mr Piya admitted the higher supply of fruit in the province may cause fruit prices to drop, so his organisation plans to ask the government for a Bt70 million budget to help subsidise fruit farmers in the area.

Fruit prices tend to fall during May and June, when fruit supply in Chanthaburi is particularly high. He said mangosteen is the most worrying fruit in terms of the falling prices. (MCOT online news)

Fisheries Dept: Thailand not against listing of shark on protection list

BANGKOK, 11 March 2013 (NNT) - The Fisheries Department has denied claims that Thailand is signaling complete opposition to the listing of several shark species under CITES, saying that relevant agencies need time to conduct further studies into possible impact of the listing.

Director-General Wimol Chantharothai said details of the proposal by CITES members need to be carefully studied prior to the listing, as local fishermen and fish breeding programmes in the country could be severely affected. He added that Thailand already enforces laws and regulations to preserve marine fish species such as banning fishing in a 4.5km area from the shore and imposing a three-month fishing ban during the breeding season.

The United States, Brazil, Ecuador, and more than 30 other countries have proposed to list several shark and ray species under CITES, which will help control the largely unregulated international trade in these species and their products. Many shark and ray species are threatened with extinction as a result of directed fishing and unintentional catch.

Government delegates are set to discuss and consider the adoption of the proposed listing on Monday and Tuesday. In order to be adopted, the proposals will need approval from two-thirds of the governments voting.

Yala bomb attack kills one, injures two
The Nation

30201690-01_big.jpg

YALA: -- A volunteer ranger was killed and two were wounded Monday when a M26 grenade hidden under the driver's seat exploded while their pickup truck was travelling on a road in Yala's Raman district.

Manat Satsue, 27, Vichit Chomwichian, 28, and Chatmongkol Thongthammachart, 27, were sent to Yala Hospital, where Manat died.

The three men were returning from a garage where the vehicle had been repaired.

In Bangkok, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohammad had allowed a delegation of 15 officials led by Chalerm to meet him in Langkawi on March 28.

The BRN group that had held peace talks with Pol Lt General Paradorn Pattanathabut, secretary-general of the National Security Council, was the "real" force behind the insurgency in the South, he said.

"The Malaysian prime minister also insists that they are the real one. If not, why would he want to host the meeting and why would the Malaysian supreme commander and other Malaysian top security officials want to take part in the meeting? If Malaysia refuses to harbour insurgents, we'll benefit,'' he said.

Seeking reconciliation in the troubled South was not a pipedream, he said.

"We dream of establishing peace through negotiations and reducing conflicts but critics are envious of us and do nothing. The government has treaded on the right path,'' he said.

It was proper for the military to represent the Thai side in negotiating with the rebels since they have been working in the area and know it the best. The government has to listen to them, he said.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has given him a clear order to inspect the restive region following the escalation in violence and he has no choice but obey.

"If I don't go to the South, I will definitely be sacked,'' he said.
