Home Insurance - Policy Difficult To Understand

Featured Replies

Hi all. We have basic home and contents insurance in place. Last year we increased the level of cover and also included flood insurance. The new receipt/certificate of cover did not specify that flood insurance was included and so I asked that they issue me a new one that did. No joy at the Chiang Mai office - they seemed to think their verbal assurance was quite adequate - so I took the matter to head office in BKK. Head office pointed me back to the manager of the CNX office and we never ended up with what we wanted. This year we just planned to renew on the same terms and conditions, only to receive a renewal letter that was very difficult to understand (in either Thai or English), and included four check boxes for different components of cover. This was partly due to the government apparently mandating some changes in relation to policies that included flood cover. I have worked for an insurance company and if I have such difficulties I wonder how others are faring (?)

Anyway even after speaking to the manager again we are still not 100% clear on exactly what we are (or are not) covered for. Have others encountered the same problem/s? Can anyone recommend a good company for home & contents insurance which is good value AND who issues policies & other documentation that is clear and complete?

Indeed this can be confusing BUT the coverage (including Flood) should be shown on your policy.

Typically polices will cover (and state on policy) you are insured against such things as Earthquake, Windstorm and Hail and will give an insured amount but with Flood the sum insured is a maximum of 100K (minimum 10K) with a premium of1% x 0.4% x 7% - note a typical deductible of 10%
