Hello, first time poster so please be kind..lol. My wife and I are wanting to move from Las Vegas USA to CM. I would like to buy a scooter trike here and bring it with the rest of our stuff. Does any body know the tax and or fees to bring this to Thailand ? I'm looking at a 150cc or maybe a little bigger 250cc, it runs around $1,500-$2,500 us . Is it better to have it new or used ? We will be retireing there and buying a house. Thanks all, Ted

2nd hand imports have been stopped, taxes on new bikes imported are very high, more than the value of the bike, then there is the problem of passing emissions tests et al to get the bike registered for road use.

In other words, don't bother importing, buy here. Although I haven't seen much available like your picture.

Thanks, then do they have reg. large scooters 150cc or better ? I'm 6ft 6in tall and I need a larger scooter, my wife is shorter and its the weight limit on the smaller scooters that would be a prob.

May I ask if you have been to Chiang Mai or Thailand before.

Your writing indicates that you may not have been. If not have you checked out the prohibition on foreigners owning real estate in Thailand. I ask this as you indicate a desire to buy a house. Ownership is different in Thailand than in the USA.

There are some trikes here but not of the type you show in your photo.

If you have not spent a certain amount of time here, would you not think it wise to come visit and get the feel of the area, the lay of the land , so to speak before making your final committment?

There is a lot of good in this area of the world, but also the other side of the coin..... there are scammers and schemers also..... so please be cautious and careful before investing larger sums of money....

What is the brand on the bike you are wanting to bring in>>>>>> Honda, Yamaha, Kawa...... there are dealers here in town that may be able to get one for you...... worth a check out anyhow

Trike Scooter............ appears difficult to find here, there are a good few here from 110 cc to big bikes....... from what I have found out most bikes and scooter people buy and import a conversion kit.......... from time to time there are trike's For Sale

Today an advert maybe of interest http://www.bahtsold.com/view/custom-made-motorbikes-for-disabled-people-129141

Not sure if it is the same place they had a very nice Honda Silverwing Trike some time ago For Sale.... few weeks ago at the Licensing Building there where 3 brand new Honda 125 Trike's.................

Last 6 months or so there is a place 50 km north west of Bangkok that have loads of new Trike Scooters in stock, different sizes, they appear to be pickups.. from small box on the back to large box even tippers.. Guess from China ? But no idea

Maybe the Disabled have a rally sometimes ? as will see lots all going the same way in like a group, 30 or 40 Trike's all together, maybe try to ask them where and how ?

Did see one in a petrol station and asked, he got someone to get the kit and convert his 650 bike into a Trike some years ago, Bike + 50,000 baht for the conversion.

Edit: few days ago in Classified on this website was a 400cc Trike For Sale http://classifieds.thaivisa.com/automotives-vehicles/motorcycles/honda-trike-400-cc-v-twin-with-green-book-213313.html

Just saw a place on Hang Dong road close to the market on the right going south that sells the Chinese made trikes.. Not sure I would want one though....

As far as moving here I would check it out first ... Nice place but not for everyone ...... If you do move here and ship goods bring everything you think you ll never need again because once your here you ll find you ll probably need most of it ..

Others here have given good advice. I just saw a Honda Forza 300 the other day and I was impressed. I haven't ridden it though. I think the 3 wheel thing is a bit gimmiky. If you can't stay upright on a scooter then you have no business being on a bike of any kind.

Except any Electrical goods!, because the supply here is 220v 50Hz, unless you want all the hassle

with converters,

OP do a few trips here and really check the place out, if your wife is not Thai she may or may not like it long term, holidaying and living are very different. As to bikes just buy what you need here, but even if you find an exotic like a trike check back here or with knowledgable friends for advice as can still be tricky for non-standard vehicles. Roads here are not like the US, it is a madhouse that you need learn to navigate to stay alive.

Hey thanks all for some good advice, Gonzo I missed the last part of your post the Trike scooters, are made in China the brand is called Sunny, not sure if they sell Sunnys there or not, I'll keep checking and looking for what thay do have there or maybe well just get a car or pick-up used to get around. Thinking about moving to Chiang mai with out seeing it first is not a real prob. for my wife ( phillippina ) or me it seems a lot like PI but cleaner.. we are looking for a slower pace of life then Vegas. and she does not want to live in PI.... We are going to visit CM around Nov this year or sooner for a week or more, to check it out ,look at homes and just take it easy... What are some of the household things do we realy need to bring for the move and what things not to bring. I did read that they will not tax us on our goods if we plan on living there full time, is that true ? Thanks again, Ted
