PHUKET: -- Police have arrested the prime suspect wanted for a triple homicide over a land conflict in Phang Nga.

After nearly three months on the run, Somsak Wongsri, 49, was arrested in Ranong on Tuesday.

He was wanted for the execution of Prajuab Choojit, 24; Sarawut Boonklin, 31; and Somboon Kimtin, 69, who was the father of popular Thai country music singer “Ice R Siam”.

The executions took place in a rubber plantation in Takuapa district on December 22.

“After he killed the three men, he went to Ranong where he was in hiding until he was arrested by police on Tuesday, at 7pm,” Police Region 8 Commander Yongyuth Charoenwanit told a press conference in Surat Thani yesterday.

Somsak was arrested at Ranong’s Saphan Pla Pier, well known among Phuket long-stay tourists and expats as the jump-off point for visa runs to Myanmar.

“He was attempting to leave Thailand,” Lt Gen Yongyuth said.

“The suspect has been charged with murder, possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, and carrying an illegal firearm in a public place,” the general added.

Somsak remained silent throughout the press conference.

“He told police in his statement that he was involved in a conflict with the three men over access to his land. The access crossed land belonging to the three men,” Gen Yongyuth explained.

“The suspect will present information only in court, which he has the right to do. He has the right to remain silent,” Gen Yongyuth reminded the press.

“Somsak has been denied police bail because his actions have been classified as a form of heinous crime,” Gen Yongyuth added.

During the press conference, Ice R-Siam pleaded with Somsak, asking why he killed her father, but Somsak remained silent.

After the press conference, police escorted Somsak to the rubber plantation in Takuapa to re-enact the crime.

Yep.

I always feel so much safer when I cross over into Mexico. No joke.

Me too. And happier, because in that case the poontang is across the border.

He was illegally denied access to his land in an attempt to force him to sell his land cheap.

Read more on this story, it sounds like he exhausted every avenue open to him to resolve the issue and in sheer desperation shot the greedy people who were illegally trying to force him to sell his land.

Illegally? Do you know Thai law on that? It's my belief that unlike some countries, a Thai owner can't be forced to sell access across his land. I believe that Thais are very, very careful to buy land with road frontage, or at least that which abuts land that has it and and land that belongs to family.

I could be wrong, but it's one of the caveats I hear regularly about Thai land.

I stand corrected access is not an automatic right.....

Such access right also called servitude or Para Jumyom and

described under the Thai Civil and Commercial Code (CCC) would need to

be registered with the relevant land department and mentioned on the

title certificate of the servient land (the land giving access to other

land) for the benefit of the land which lacks of access (dominant

land).

I guess we will never know if legal access was granted in this case.
