Corrupt Police extort cash from Japanese Tourist at North Pattaya Hotel

police-52.jpg

PATTAYA: -- On Monday a Japanese Tourist contacted the local media to report a case of alleged extortion by corrupt Police Officers which occurred on 15th March, Mr. Takaya Olano aged 49 explained to us that back on 15th March in the evening, he met a prostitute on Pattaya Beach and took her back to his North Pattaya Hotel Room where the pair engaged in sexual intercourse.

When they had finished there was a knock on the door and 3 Thai men and a Middle-Eastern Man were there and explained they worked for the Child and Women Protection Unit, which is a division of the Royal Thai Police specializing in crimes involving human trafficking and prostitution.

The men claimed Mr. Olano had broken the law by paying for sex and he was now under arrest and would be taken to Pattaya Police Station. Mr. Olano was escorted to a car and was on his way to the Police Station when the group gave him the option of paying them 10,000 Baht to clear the case and avoid prosecution.

He decided to take this option and stopped at an ATM where he withdrew the cash and gave it to the men who then took Mr. Olano back to his Hotel and then left.

Of course I know nothing of the story other than what I've read... so my comments are simply nothing more than speculation....

As harrycallahan commented; this looks to as though its nothing more than impersonation.

That raises the issue of how people in Thailand expect some level of extortion from the police. Their reprehensible reputation opens this gap for the impersonators (if this is the case).

I wonder what would have happened had the Japanese chappy refused to pay the 'bribe' and insisted on being taken to the station.

As I understand it (but may be mistaken) even with undercover investigations Uniformed police officers will be on the scene when or shortly after arrests are made. This makes it harder for impersonators to fake being a police officer by simply presenting a fake ID, although some could obtain a uniform to appear more convincing.

How many of us can tell the difference between a real Police ID and a Fake Police ID ?

whatever it is , its just another bad image of the kingdom .... just another one among so many .

I'm all for it to be honest.

You have some seedy little Japanese man picking up prostitutes from the street and you have some seedy little cops extorting money from him.

Long may this continue. Maybe one day, you'll be able to take a stroll along the beach without people propositionong your wife. Maybe you'll be able to take a walk along with the family at 9:30 am without witnessing the dregs of both Western and Thai society negotiating for sexual services. Seems like the dregs of Japan have joined in.

I imagine the Japanese man forgot to mention his extortioners had accused him of taking an underage girl. I guess that slipped his mind but I have little doubt that is what they accused him of and that is why he was so keen to part with 10k.

Now - I'm not against prostitution but what happens there on the beach at all hours of the day is pretty disgusting. I've seen smarter vagrants than most of the punters that gather there & partake.

Regardless of beach road. That area isnt a place to bring a wife or family

It's bloody supposed to be! It wasn't designed to be an open-air brothel.

Agreed - the open air brothel is at the end of the beach.

I assume the cops are corrupt if they extort, so that wasn't needed, unless the uncorrupted ones shake down tourists too.... good for him raising a stink. Probably be blacklisted?

Like my friends say "Why would you bring your wife to Pattaya?"... Open air brothels are more healthy too, like smoke free bars.

So much hand wringing over the world's oldest profession in Thailand. If it upsets you so much, I suggest you turn a blind eye to it because it isn't going anywhere. And as has been said time and time again, the farang segment of the prostitution business in Thailand is but a fraction of the overall market. So either pick a better location to live if it upsets you so much or do as the Thais do, ignore it as a fact of life in the kingdom. No amount of western consternation is going to make one iota of difference to change the landscape.

On another note, who would have thought a Japanese man would be so kee neow that he would stoop to taking a girl from beach road instead of one of the higher end clubs.

Very, bad call by the Jap. Regardless of who is right and who is wrong the correct call would of been to pay the 10 grand and get the f*** out of Dodge. Refer to the earlier thread with the American guy and alleged underage girl. Our Jap friend is now plastered all over the internet. Nothing good will come of this for him. Why take this chance for a measly 10 grand. Chalk it up to experience and move on.

Japanese tourist contacts local media to tell them that he broke the law. Maybe he'll be arrested and sent to prison.

But he didnt break any Thai law, only the provider of prostitution, not the client, commits an offence unnder Thai law. Furthermore there was no mention anywhere that she was underage so why are others bleeting as if that was the allegation?

What is seedy about this Japanese tourist? He is victim of a serious crime, how does that make him seedy?

this is very unusual news story. I hope the Japanese guy returns home safely

Last night on BR, about 8.30PM, I walked by as a nondescript 'Asian' was engaging a well-dressed lissome young beauty across Mike SM. Conversation was short and soon they were on their way across the road.

She seemed oddly out of place on BR, more like she belonged to a high end club. She looked very young but not necessarily underage. And she was defo not a LB.

Certain she can ask and get much more than her 'regular' coworkers.

According to the report the police said they were from the child protection unit. If thats not going to put the Sh*t up you then nothing is. It doesn't matter if he broke any laws or not. If you ever find yourself in a situation like this PAY UP.

they would have probably asked much more than 10k if the sex worker was under age,

for posessing illegal substances in your room tourists have been asked 100k in similar 'busts' couple of years ago
