BANGKOK: -- As a leading airport in the region, Suvarnabhumi Airport continues to renew its facilities in hopes of catering to the needs of a larger group of travellers in the near future.

With the idea of creating a lasting impression on airport users beyond the various extravagant duty-free shops, restaurants, and bars, Airports of Thailand (AOT) and Siam Cement (SCG) have joined hands to spruce up toilets inside the passenger terminals. Serving up to 150,000 passengers a day from all parts of the world, this plan has been launched as a means to further improve Thailand’s image as a nation with a great consciousness for service.

In line with the growing need to construct energy-saving designs, there has been an emphasis on the concept of ‘The Seven Wonders of Thailand’, incorporating special interior designs within the toilets to resemble their messages.

Seven toilets in the airport have been chosen for the 'wonders' of renovation. The themes are River of Life, Festival, Move Around, Happy Moment, Street Life, Flower Market and Sea Sight.

The River of Life theme is designed to reflect the interconnectedness of the Thai lifestyle with the river. With proper ventilation systems designed seamlessly with beautiful wood crafts, the rooms are further equipped with technological touches. LED screens have been hung on the windows to allow this river-house design to present a panoramic view of the Chao Phraya riverbanks.

The other completed theme is known as the Street Life, with modern blends of architectural designs to reflect the cosmopolitan lifestyles of the city. With special emphasis on black, white and graphic touches, the revamped toilets represent modernity.

Very comfortable, very clean, very fresh, very modern. All new, yeah very nice," said Sean McRobert, tourist.

The Seven Wonders Themed facilities will be completed by July.

On the other hand, Wilaiwan Nadwilai, AOT director, claims that the management recognises the need to increase the amount of toilets around the airport, with further plans to construct more toilets as well as to fully renovate all existing ones.

“Even though we can renovate all the toilets and make them beautiful, it would be meaningless if the sub-structure does not welcome it. Future problems would occur all the time, which is definitely not what we want. Therefore, we have to gradually improve all the facilities,” said the AOT director.

With plans to renovate all 124 toilets, consisting of 1,109 cubicles, budget of up to 347 million baht is required. On the other hand, toilets for persons with disabilities and for parents looking for a place to change diapers for their babies have also been improved to provide easy access to travellers. Six of them are available on the departure level while just one is added to the arrival floor, all of which will be completed by 2016. (MCOT online news)

Will the toilet make a boiiiiiiing noise when you sit on it, followed by a drum roll on first splash down.

Only if you're being filmed for a Thai comedy movie! Seriously, I remember one, a long featured scene of which involved a well-known rotund comedian sitting on the toilet, giving a moment-by-moment "baseball announcer-style" detailed description of the progression of his own bowel movement, complete with silly sound effects. Lovely.

Wow around USD11.5million. Outstanding, they clearly have spent the ill-gotten gains from building the damned airport and need to top up the trough. That's $90,000 per toilet or $10,000 per cubicle. Are they installing play stations and 3D cinema with surround sound in each cubicle?

347 million baht for 1,109 stalls is 313,000 baht per stall to make toilets a sightseeing attraction. Whoever thought of this will no doubt see a 100,000 baht per stall windfall and is in keeping with printing an expensive tourism magazine in Thai language only and awarding film festival contracts to the highest briber. Is AOT sure they want people being made more cognizant of where they are when they see dirty footprints on the toilet seats?

Thainess? Does that mean there's going to be piss all over the floor? sad.png

No, probably a few squalid splats of shit too - especially as they are doing away with their squats! - be prepared folks - footprints on the seat, shit everywhere! But hey, lets not forget the benefits! Not having to squat for a turd everyday will help the nation relieve bad arthritis from their knees and other joints! - Bugger the fact that they spend 5 minutes having a Donald Trump while they spend 12 hours a day bent double in a paddy field! Thailand is the hub of helping its citizens to SHIT responsibly, thus causing no back pain or knee afflictions - Thank God for the government! In the Thai governments Anal Retraining plan, will they be providing small step ladders for the elderly and infirm to be able to climb up on a western style toilet to securely be able to stand on the seat for a dump? Will they provide rails to hold onto or maybe Thai training assistants to help those with a lack of knowledge to mount the bog?

Will 7/11 provide anal assistance 24/7? to the anally challenged?

I forsee an outbreak in fecal related illness! and some overtime buy the bog cleaners!

I can remember about 15 years ago flying back and forth from Shanghai to Bangkok, the flight attendants having to close various toilets on the planes after (Mainly Chinese) Passengers had stood on the seats and either broken them or had a slight mishap and shat on the floor...oh what fun!
