Commerce Ministry to step up clampdown on copyright violation before Songkran

BANGKOK, 19 March 2013 (NNT) – The Commerce Ministry will step up the clampdown on copyright violations ahead the annual Songkran holiday arrives in mid-April.

Commerce Minister Nattawut Saikuar said on Monday that the first meeting of the sub-committee in charge of the National IPRs Center of Enforcement has approved the setting up of 6 new working groups to strengthen the clampdown of intellectual property and copyright infringement in the country.

Mr. Nattawut elaborated that the new working groups include such teams as the investigation and suppression unit, the law enforcement integration unit and the online copyright infringement suppression unit.

The Deputy Commerce Minister stated that all groups will commence work after the formation.

In addition, he said the National IPRs Center of Enforcement is set to be officially opened on April 26th, which is also the World IP Day.

Concerning the suppression of intellectual property and copyright violation, Mr. Nattawut said that all related agencies have been instructed to strengthen their works across the country, especially in popular tourist destinations and hangout places, during the upcoming Songkran festival.

He said that attention will be particularly given to the areas known as the red zone during the Thai New Year celebration period, when sales of pirated items are usually high.
