Hi

this winter there are quite a lot of birds here, anybody knows the name of the big black and white birds. Impressive wingspan, seen frequently at lakes and circling in the sky.

A picture would be helpful. Does it look like a bird of prey? Waterfowl? Are they flying in groups or singularly? I have noticed quite a few sea eagles about. Google "Birds of Phuket" for more info.

I have seen many herons lately in groups, especially early morning and around sunset, could be you mean those.

a few species fit that bill (pardon any pun) Openbill Stork fits it extremely well... They often congregate & circle in very large numbers.

I think they are Sea Eagles

White-bellied is possible, & are becoming scarcer in Thailand.. Osprey another possibility on the raptor front....

ball's in the OP's court, to choose his weapon.. a nice bit of ammo to play with now. ...wink.png

Where is this on the island? All I get in my area (Rassada) are swiflets and what are either sea eagles or Brahmini Kites

I reckon it's the Phuket Immigration police in disguise, hovering around the Phuket skies ready to pounce on some unsuspecting illegal working Russians!!! biggrin.png

I have seen them a few times in both Rawai and Nai Harn, but thought they were herons.

Yes, had hundreds of these circling over Nai Harn beach two weekends ago and then they all came low over the beach and headed for waters behind the lagoon. Many of the Thais were "ooooooohhhhhh, ahhhhhhhhh".

The only bird watching I do in Phuket, is down on Bangla at midnight!! thumbsup.gif

They have already found a "nest" by midnight. The early bird catches the farang, ahh, I mean, worm. :) :)
