phuketjock Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 (edited) @namkangman & jimi, What staunch outstanding pillars of Thai society you both are, I take my hat off to both of you. Fine chaps you both are, well done. Now let me think, what could I possibly need on holiday in Phuket that my hotel receptionist or the first person I meet like the nearest travel desk could not tell me where to find in, say, 2 or 3 minutes. Or even anyone in the nearest bar. Dear me I can't think of anything that difficult that any holidaymaker with half a brain would require on their holiday. Then again many of the tourists I have been meeting lately don't appear to have even that much brains. P.S. You two fine fellows should think about running for Phuket governor and deputy, then maybe you could sort out this Phuket transpost fiasco between you. Edited March 25, 2013 by phuketjock

Well, just a quick example for you, a guy comes to Phuket for a holiday and whilst here, he would like to get some dental work done. So, he asks his receptionist, who stares back at him with a blank look. No luck there. So, he goes to a bar, meets someone who tells him, "Sorry, I can't help you. This is my first holiday here." No luck there either. So, he does a Google search and finds the thaivisa website. He sees there's a thread about dentists on the island, but the last post was more than 6 months ago. So, he joins, starts a new thread and gets some good recommendation and location information. Apparently, you're the only one on here who has a problem with the above scenario. I'm surprised your advice wasn't, "Just ask a bar girl." Edited March 25, 2013 by NamKangMan

I'm surprised your advice wasn't, "Just ask a bar girl." There are just a few flaws in your senario, I have yet to come across a hotel receptionist anywhere in Thailand that has not had recent dental work done, even if it was just whitening. Same for any bar in the Kingdom where I am sure at least some of the staff, if not the owner, would have visited the dentist fairly recently. Have you actually " googled " dentist Phuket " ? I don't think you would ever need to go near Thaivisa if you did. I counted 17 Phuket dentists on the first page, I didn't bother looking at page 2. Poor choice of senario namkangman

From namkangmans post that you agreed with, maybe you should read posts more carefully before you state your agreement to them. A comment is not a thread. Back to my post: This thread is not about tourists. Although at times NKM seems to more worried about them and try's to beat the same dead horse about public transit and tourists on every topic he can... I have my own transportation and have had since I arrived here many years ago. But that's another subject.

Poor choice of senario namkangman The flaw in your post is if you are lucky enough to find a receptionist who has had dental work done, it is very subjective as to what is "good dental work" and what is not. Also, in 2 minutes you can ask the question on this forum and receive several recommendations to consider, not just one recommendation from a receptionist. Googling "Phuket dentists" may list many names and addresses of dentists here, but many would like to read several "reviews" from first hand experiences. Once again, a lot easier to post on a forum than going around speaking to receptionists, bar staff and bar owners.
phuketjock Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 @ jimi Not sure what the point of your last post is as I am sure this thread is not transport either????? @ nkm I think I would, personally anyway, put more credence in a local receptionists dental recommendation than anything I read on Thaivisa, but I don't have to I went and found my own dentist the old tried and tested way as I do with most things. With the number of dentists in Phuket it is probably unlikely that you would get the same one recommended by 2 posters on Thaivisa. Your point is moot anyway no one with a brain would come to any holiday destination for dental or medical treatment without doing extensive research beforehand, if they do then they deserve any mess they encounter. Do it yourself has always worked for me!!!!

Do it yourself has always worked for me!!!! Do it yourself always worked for me too. And my first trips to Thailand were just that, as there was no internet at the time to consult for specific info I needed or wanted. But now, we have the luxury of hearing the opinion of those who are there, feet on the ground, that would actually understand your needs (The Thai reception lady? Really?? Like she really understands or cares what you're looking for???), and quite possibly had first hand experience with what you want. There's no shame in seeking first hand local info from those in the know. I give you credit for being a 'figure it out for yourself kind of guy'. But there's nothing wrong with seeking help from those that may know better, and help you to narrow your focus some. And there's nothing wrong with sharing info to help others either. Which is what these forums (should be) are all about. If you don't need the help of others, and don't feel a need to share anything with them, why read/post here?

I have no problem sharing or helping anyone when and if real assistance is necessary, which is not the case on this thread, the OP is a well known troll. I agree that these forums should be used for good when they can but as you point out yourself they are not always used in a helpful way. Hence my playfulness with the other posters. No offence intended to anyone just some fun on a troll post. 1

Poor choice of senario namkangman I would never take the advice of a hotel receptionist when it came to dental care. They only earn 9000 baht a month and you would probably end up in some backyard butchers with one of your kidneys being removed. Edited March 26, 2013 by IrishIvan
