Glasses

Based on the feedback in this thread, I went to First Optic yesterday.

Brought my 11 year old daughter as well, she was complaining about

head/eye aches when reading a lot ....

The guy was very nice, checked out my daughter, said her eye sight

was just slightly off. To my surprise, when I asked him if she should

get glasses he suggested to wait, and use simple eye tear drops

instead. He could have easily sold me a pair of glasses for my daughter

but he instead suggest whet he thought was the better way for her.

I needed new reading glasses. Broke mine. I'm the guy who usually

gets my glasses done in Phnom Penh. I do annual trips and get decent

quality glasses for $40 USD all inclusive, with the standard UV/anti-

reflection/scratch resist and "handsome man" frame, lol ....

Anyway, this guy gave me a checkup, showed me some frames, I explained

reading glasses only, just cheap sturdy frame ... 2,000 baht all inclusive !

I didn't even bother to bargain, considering hes choice of recommendation

for my daughter.

He has one hour service, I opted for next day pick up, was easier for me.

Picked them up today, typing this with my new glasses. 100% perfect - very

satisfied !

Overall, for Thailand, I think that's a great deal. He also asked if I had old

frames, he was willing to use those. Next time !

Very decent guy I must say, very untypical attitude. I told him I came because

of internet recommendation. He just smiled.

Will definitely use again. Very happy customer !

Cheers,

I worn spectacles for 43 years. Began buying them online 4 years ago. But what jbrain warned about everyone should listen to carefully

The distance between your pupils is indeed a proper measurement done by an optician and not by the optometrist doing an eye exam. You can ask the optometrist and if he had the visual gadget you look into while he measures that, then you can get that noted on your prescription.

HOWEVER, with progressive lenses the critical pupillary distance is vertical between the bottom of the lens shape and the center of your pupils. And folks, that measurement changes with every lens shape. That's what the guy is measuring with the magic marker pen doing it manually which is never accurate for small lens shapes. A proper opitical shop has the equipment to accurate measure this distance

Lens shapes depends on the frame you choose, so this critical distance changes every time you change frames... if the lenses are really large size, it won't matter too much if its a guesstimate, But if small lenses, you will need to get an optical shop to make the measurement using the actual frame you have chosen. That's why the clear plastic is inside a new frame, and frames come with a pattern to cut the lenses to proper shape... the manufacturer usually puts an approximate vertical distance on that pattern, but its a guess

Large lenses for progressives - not such a big deal. Take a chance doing it all online with a good prescription obtained local optometrist... you should be okay

Small lenses, you'll be disappointed if you don't get that measurement using your frame and lens shape at a local optical shop.

I have heard nothing but good things about Zenni and I was ready to order from them, but there was no way for me to pay! They would not accept my American MasterCard or Visa as I live in Thailand and the billing address is in the US. They would not accept my Bangkok Bank Visa debit card. They would not accept a bank transfer.

I do not have a Pay Pay account. Any ideas how I can pay them?
