PM Yingluck concerned over smoke haze problem in North

BANGKOK, 27 March 2013 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has expressed concerns over the smoke haze problem, which continues to hit residents in Thailand’s northern region hard.

Government Spokesman Tossaporn Serirak said on Tuesday that, during the weekly Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra expressed worries about the impact of ongoing drought and smoke haze problems in the upper part of Thailand.

Mr. Tossaporn said the PM already instructed related ministries to update the meeting with the latest on the situation in affected areas, particularly in Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son provinces, where the problems have worsened in the past week.

According to deputy government spokesperson Chalitrat Chandrubeksa, Deputy PM Plodprasop Suraswadi reported to the Cabinet that the air quality in 9 haze-hit Northern provinces has been at moderate to dangerous levels in the past week.

He added that some of them have seen their PM10 (particles less than 10 micrometers in diameter) above the standard 120 micrograms-per-cubic-meter level.

The deputy prime minister also informed the meeting that the Bureau of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation has already been advised to commence the artificial rainmaking operation in troubled areas.

Mr. Chalitrat added that Deputy PM and Education Minister Pongthep Thepkanjana suggested the government to employ diplomatic channels to gain collaboration from neighboring countries in clamping down on all forest burning activities.

He said the Premier also instructed the Science Ministry to keep a close eye on the situation while urging all concerned offices to speedily put the problem to an end.

Expect to see the same statement in the news about this time next year.

Agree.....March 2014 statement will be the same as this years......delivered by PM Yaowapa

I'm just waiting for old Plodprasop to recommend parking 1000 planes at Chiang Mai airport, with their propellers spinning, to blow the smoke away.

You might be happy to see, that they are already on it...

The PM seems more concerned with how many countries, she can visit than any probems that are ongoing inside Thai borders. She might be on course for a new record for travel by any government leader, to date.

I notice the Science Minister did not mention the high reading other than over 120 ppm, guess he did not want to cause more concern to what Ms gadabout is already so worried about. I did notice that she has set her travel itnerary for the rest of the year. Wonder if she will get the same reception, older brother got in the US?

Rice scam under funded

Tax rebate on paid on cars, has gone missing , so more funds are needed to repay the punter.

Strong baht seem to futher affect exports in a negitive manner.

Tourist are not of the proper financial group to pick up the slack for robust corruption to keep troops happy.

A small matter of perjury, but this only needs to linger for 7 years for statue of limitions to cover it.

Shuffling debt and monetary funds around like musical chairs to stay transparent in the handling of funds????

A cabinet that are self professed experts/consultants on solving all problems in a matter of months

Not a single populist pre election promise appears to have been fulfilled to date

It really appears that the volume of problems which this government has created will set another record to go with all the nonsense/BS that is being thrown around.

PM Yingluck concerned over smoke haze problem in North was too busy planning her next diplomatic trips and shopping tours

This problem existed for probably several months and weeks, and then you suddenly dare to say: "Oh, I'm worried just now".....

Great name for a government spokesman, Tossaporn. Wonder what his nickname is ?

The IN Channel news said there are up to another 30 countries to be visited this year. Head in the sand over problems at home or is it head in the clouds at taxpayers expense ?

You are not a good farang...... Don't you know that if you bring up facts that make Thai people look bad, you have lost face yourself ?? :-)

Hahaha nice catch on last year's post on this smoke issue. I guess when "concern" is expressed next year, you can repost this thread. One year has passed from this big problem before, and..........nothing has been done.

So does that mean this is unsolvable ?? If so why would Yingluck even bother to comment on it ?? Maybe if She Who Must Be Obeyed is the next PM, things will be different...... At least this year the government is not making a fool of themselves by claiming the smoke is coming from Burma !!!!

Give the young Lady a break fellas , at least she can tell the difference between dust and smoke, however that's where the acalaides stop , this bullsh!!t go's on each year also includes water shortages around Phitsanulok ,high death toll in Songkran festival , next is , the rivers flooding , BKK flooding , all this has been going on for eons, pity someone don't fix the problems.

I wonder how the black hole theory is working out?

I was wondering the same thing. Haven't heard back from NASA yet.

A pity that so many posters are just using the present disaster to score cheap political points. Let's be honest, NO government has been able to change the mindset of the Northern Thais which could be summed up as "if it moves, eat it; if it doesn't move, burn it".

It would seem that every year for the last couple of decades we've had a load of waffle and platitudes from whichever party/coup leaders are in charge, but nothing is ever actually done to address the real problem.

I thought that was a Isan saying, " If it moves it is eaten".... :-)

Not sure it is so much cheap shots as it is disgust at the inability

of the government to solve a SERIOUS health issue. It is all about will

to do what is necessary. If the government made the crime of burning a death penalty, and sent out roving patrols to mete out this penalty on the spot, the air of north Thailand would be crystal clear... Clearly this would be over the top, but I only use it to illustrate the point that the government needs to step up their game and do something. This issue is personal for me, as I have a daughter, and this horrific pollution is what drove me out of Chiang Mai.

I am sure her words of concern are so soothing to the people of the North

Then again, it is a PTP voting region ... now they can see what they voted for

Nothing but hollow words with little to no action ...

Of course is the PM concerned.

and someone said Yingluck would not care. not true at all. another myth destroyed.

Yingluck has ordered that this problem be put to an end just as she did with political corruption.

What more do you want?

Is it working? Given all the smoke I haven't seen or heard a plane in Chiangmai. Maybe they are waiting for the smoke to clear before sending the planes up.

After dealing with a bunch of sick coughing children in Chiang Rai and having cancelled all their PE lessons for the week, I couldn't give a monkey's fart whether Yingluck is concerned or not. The selfishness, laziness and ineptitude of adults here is damaging the future of their kids in so many ways. My mate complained about it to his (well educated) missus. Her response "not your business, that's like me complaining about the rain in England". I've thought about contacting all international schools in northern Thailand to arrange a protest but when I know I'll be confronted by such racist attitudes I wonder if it's worth it. But then I see nothing forthcoming from locals coupled with the state of children which are under my care and the blood just boils. Thai parents, WHERE ARE YOU? (apologies for shouting. Actually I'm not sorry, seriously WHERE THE XXXX ARE YOU?)

I just love the solution - they are going to start the rainmaking. So if you hear weird mumbling or drum beating around Dr Future's house, spare a thought for all the crap they will fly into the atmosphere from planes that will add to the pollution your breathe. If people aren't sick now with respiratory problems, just give it a month.
