Sukhumbhand lists 10 urgent tasks for city government
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra yesterday set 10 top priorities for city officials as he was inaugurated for a second term.

The priorities include the installation of 20,000 security cameras, implementation of the community volunteer programme to fight crime and illicit drugs, and the reduction of fares on two BTS Skytrain extension routes to Bt10.

Other urgent tasks are the reduction of interest charges in city-run pawnshops; the enhancement of job skills, including free training in foreign languages; pay increases for the staff of city-run day-care centres; and the establishment of 5,000 free Wi-Fi spots.

Meeting with top city officials, Sukhumbhand thanked them for their hard work organising the gubernatorial race.

He said the 1.2 million votes he received "are both a mandate and a sign of the great expectations placed in me and the Democrat Party to get the job done".

He promised to unveil his administrative team, including his deputies, by Monday.

Today the governor is scheduled to inspect fire-fighting teams' readiness in the capital's eastern districts of Nong Chok and Lat Krabang.

...and he said, it will be his personal responsibility, to tackle all 10 points successfully...or otherwise blame FIFA....wai.gif

No mention of conducting a meaningful and on-going enforcement campaign re the non-smoking laws, particularly those that relate to enclosed bars, restaurants and entertainment venues.

O

other urgent tasks are the reduction of interest charges in city-run pawnshops

This seems to show a forward thinking policy due to the just passed 2 trillion baht loan bill, cos as sure as eggs are eggs the fat cats won't be picking up the bill it'll be the ordinary man and woman in the street picking up the bill.

The BMA sets the interest rates on pawn shops?????

Security cameras - 6 months to one year (why needed anyway)

Volunteer system to fight crime - 6 months (probably not going to work)

Reduction of fares - A stroke of a pen

Interest rates - A stroke of a pen

Training - Ongoing

Day care pay rises - A stroke of a pen

5000 free wifi spots - 6 months

Well, what a load of wiffly waffly nonsense. And to think they actually bother to have an election for people to come up with these as priorities for Bangkok.

Don't be silly.

During the gubernatorial election the "Real PM" PROMISED that whichever side won the government would work seamlessly with the BKK Governor.

Time to hold her to that promise methinks.

Not much chance of that happening - looks like it'll be business as usual with the governor obstructing the Government - he's already sent out the challenge

'A stroke of the pen" followed by being charged of overstepping ones authority.

At least we have new, modern design garbage bins, transparent as well :-)

A number of years back ( about 13-14 in my memory is correct) Peek Traffic Management from the U.K were commissioned to install a computer managed traffic control system in line with the system they installed and operated in conjunction with the police in London,

One of our female teachers came with her husband who was one of Peeks engineers on a 2 year contract to install a commission and initiate the system with his locally recruited Thai colleagues and her husband had many an interesting tale to tell too.

Sabots were the preferred form of footwear for the senior police officers who came to view the system and its progress, delayed and lost equipment deliveries, cabling disappeared, control boxes caught fire and when the system was given a trial run there were indeed many missing links in the grid system.

In short the traffic police didn't want the system to work as their income was going to be dramatically affected.Control boxes in the police booths suffered many an assorted failure from the booth cat peeing on the box to coffee being spilt on the box, mysterious conflagrations and an amazing number of electrical faults too and out and out vandalism.

Going to be one hell of a task to regulate the police income traffic flow here and it's going to be a long time frame to get it right if it is allowed to run smoothly.

Well there are two hopes, '' Bob Hope and No Hope,'' Sadly Bob Hope is dead .whistling.gif

Excellent thanks. I knew of this but I did not have a comprehensive filler. I do know they like the isolation of an air-conditioned box and not having to do any work. They also like to be able to chat up their giks and girl friends which is why some intersections take ages to change. That from a Police Lt General I play golf with... :)

You seems to frequent the wrong circles and company. What's next? You admitting to have played golf with Pol. General Pongsapat, our nearly new Bangkok governor?

I assume you understand nothing personal and all that. Tonight before going to soi Cowboy I first played a bit of pool near Sukhumvit soi 5 and said hello to my favorite Pol. Sgt. Major pool opponent smile.png

Good attempt to lure the population out of cars onto the BTS by aiming for a 10 baht charge.....give the guy a break....the election format was the usual Thaksin bad democrats good....he probably has not received instruction on what he is supposed to do when installed..luckily Yingluck and the team will help him come up with a few people friendly initiatives

The post I'm replying to is not really worth it. Thererefor I'll stop now.

I can't remember any candidate, nor any member of the public for that matter, putting any importance on this whatsoever. So no surprise that no one's mentioning it now. Don't you think?

The 10 baht charge is just for the extensions, a reduction from 15 baht.

What about traffic and the idiocy of having police overide traffic lights? Get them out on the side walks issuing tickets for traffic infringements and let the computers control traffic in sync between intersections. That way we would not have to wait for 5-10 mins per light change.

Great idea. Comes down to money. Do you know how much an automated traffic management system costs?

Thai government has its own traffic management system for them selves.. its called block the road with 5-0 and get out of my way civilian.

Possibly it would have worked 13 or 14 years ago but that is long gone.

The only thing that will work now is getting more vehicles off the roads.

As the present Federal government has indicated they have no intention to work with him Bangkok will be on their own.sad.png

Pedestrianise Sukhumvit and use some of these so called cameras to set up a charge for car access to downtown, I say. Then use the money to add rolling stock for the bts .

Jobs a good in.

Ignoring a powerbase of block voters is a big risk, as Abhisit found to his cost, PTP will support Bangkok and assist in the high profile projects, it is in their best interests. Sukumband will be left to take the heat for the traffic, garbage. potholes, and occasional flooding issues, As has been said above, it is Sukhumbhand that needs to work with and compliment the government......not rely on the inefficatious Democrats

It's interesting to read that some seem to think that Pheu Thai = Government, mind you their the majority partner in the coalition and the way PM Yingluck was helping her (brothers) candidate in the BKK governor elections one may be excused in thinking so.

In the mean time the Bangkok governor will promote only good policies as the PM has promised to seamlessly assist / help with those. Of course there can't be an argument on what constitutes a 'good' policy, now can it?
