South-East Asia Round Trip - What Do I Need?

Featured Replies

Hello everybody,

My plan is to start in Bangkok (air entry) and stay in Thailand a few weeks. Then go to Laos, Vietnam and Cambodja (probably 2 months or more), and then back to Thailand (land entry) and stay there for another couple of weeks. My goal is just to travel and experience the region, no working or anything.

I'm from The Netherlands and under 50 years of age.

What do I need?

Is it possible to get a second tourist visa in such short succession to the first?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

If you do not have air ticket out of Bangkok within 30 days it is best to obtain a tourist visa for Thailand or airline might require you purchase a ticket. Once in Thailand you can easily obtain visas for other countries and if required for your return to Thailand (although you would be 15 days by land or 30 days by air).

If you plan to Fly to Bangkok and then go to Cambodia, Laos and VN by land, then you will need a visa for each country. Cambodia issues a visa online and is easy to get (I suggest doing it before you depart for SEA.) Laos visa on arrival at the boarder is available. VN has a visa on arrival for flights, but not most boarder crossings. If you fly in to HMC or Hanoi, apply online with one of the agents to get your pre-approval letter then get a visa on arrival at the airport. If you go by land you may need to get a visa from the embassy in Bangkok (or your home country.) I always fly and use the online services for Cambodia and VN but Laos is visa on arrival, easy to buy at any checkpoint. Enjoy your travels.

Cambodia is also very easy to obtain on arrival - the only visa he needs prior to travel is for Thailand to avoid airline issues and with no set plans believe he is best served by getting what he needs when he needs it. He could easily change mind.

Thanks for your advice.

Also, I'm sorry for not being very clear. I know what to do for cambodja, Laos and Vietnam. I just want to know what I need for Thailand, especially for the 2nd entry.

You do not need unless your stay will be longer than a visa exempt entry allows and you can obtain in any of the countries mentioned if that is the case. Or just make another border crossing and return.

Passport/money

for Thailand get a double entry tourist visa before u leave or get a new visa at any of the bordering countries if u want come back to Thailand,

'or get 15 days with a land crossing or 30 days flying in.

Other than that

as above passport and an atm card

If you don't have a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days or a visa the airline can refuse boarding for your flight. You could buy a one way ticket to Cambodia (check airasia.com) and start your next trip from there.

You will get a 15 day visa exempt entry (you don't get visas at airport or border crossings unless VOA qualified) at border when you return.

Getting a tourist visa with up to 3 entries would give you a 60 day entry each time and you would not need an onward ticket.

Thanks for the tip. I found a really cheap ticket! :)

One more question:

In flight you get an immigration form that you need to fill out: http://www.thaivisa.com/forms/arrfront1.jpg / http://www.thaivisa.com/forms/arrback1.jpg

I don't have a pre-arranged visa, so I don't fill in the visa no., right?

What do I put in address if I didn't book anything? I think it's better to put in something...?

And what is meant by port of embarkation / disembarkation?

I would get a double entry tourist visa before you leave for Thailand, 60 euros. It is valid for 6 months, will get you 60 days permission to stay on each entry (can be extended for 30 days more for 1900 baht), and will cover your trips into Thailand without having to purchase a "disposable" ticket. Here's the website: http://www.thaiconsulate-amsterdam.org/uk/page3/page3.html

Visas for travel to neighboring countries can be handled locally, either at the border, at their embassy in Bangkok, or on-line for Cambodia.

Thanks for the tip. I found a really cheap ticket! smile.png

Place you arrived/departed.

That is an arrival form and all must fill it in (Thai did on exit so do not do again - they use copy). If you have no visa or re-entry permit you just leave that portion blank. You put where you started current trip (suspect somewhere in Europe if you do not layover somewhere) and destination the place you intend to clear immigration and enter (Bangkok or other airport in Thailand).

The other way around: embarkation / disembarkation = departure / arrival

Thanks! So it's the embarkation and disembarkation of the flight. I get it now. :)

Oh, and...

Happy new year! wai.gif
