BOMB EXPERTS successfully defuse a bomb aimed at harming rangers patrolling in Sai Buri in Pattani yesterday.

PATTANI: -- Rangers patrolling a rural road narrowly escaped death yesterday from a roadside bomb in Pattani's Sai Buri district.

Meanwhile, the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 Front reported that the month of March saw a total of 132 casualties in the southern insurgency.

The eight-strong ranger team alerted police and a bomb squad at 11am to defuse the bomb, which was planted by a bridge in Ban Payor in Tambon Kadunong and linked to a trigger device hidden in the woods.

After 30 minutes of spraying water to destroy the bomb circuit, experts spent a tense half an hour defusing and dismantling the bomb in the hot sun while officials watched the nail-biting operation.

The team, led by Lance Corporal Phuwarin Khongthong, was split into two, one patrolling the forest and the other patrolling the road. They spotted two young men hiding suspiciously in nearby woods, which caused the pair, in their teens, to flee.

The rangers patrolling in the woods saw electrical wire linked to the bridge, and urged fellow rangers on the road to stop and take shelter while they alerted the bomb squad.

Earlier, insurgents burned down a total of 15 security cameras in Khok Pho district in Pattani - nine in Khok Pho municipal area, one in Tambon Makrud, and three in Tambon Na Ket.

In Songkhla, ISOC Region 4 Front revealed that there were 57 violent attacks - 36 shootings, 15 bombings, five incidents of public disturbance and one case of arson - from March 1-31. Some 33 people were killed and 99 others injured.

Divided by province, Pattani had 22 incidents, Yala had 12, Narathiwat had 21 incidents, and Songkhla had two incidents.

From January 1, 2004 to March 31 (Sunday), a total of 5,075 people were killed and 9,279 injured in the unrest.

Shouldn't they be wearing something to protect their faces? The body armour isn't going to be of much use if they don't have a head 0_0

I am sure none of that gear would help them if the bomb went off, this is a part of the problem on the ground ,out of date equipment, limited education (knowledge) no high tech equipment, (drones with Heat/ordnance detection), attack helicopters, sat surveillance etc, the situation is now at a advanced stage where you can only contain the terrorists, you wont beat them ,unless they want to go in that direction.bah.gif

Not sure if I agree with you ion control them. they seem to have nothing holding them back.

the one ray of light in the whole situation was the villagers turning in the terrorist the other day.

The rangers didn't have guns to fire at the fleeing insurgents or perhaps they were loaded with slow bullets which can be outrun........????

So they have resorted to using children (Teens) to do their dirty work, this proves that they are cowards. and beyond any form of reconciliation, when are we going to relies that these people not understand words, they only understand one language, and that is the language of the "gun"

And that attitude is what started all this terror!

It's this attitude, I'm guessing from an 'educated' Bangkok Thai (?) which is the very reason why all negotiations will fail.

I'm guessing that the body armour is to protect against gunfire rather than bombs.

Didn't Chalerm say a while back that the burning of security cameras was done by companies that didn't get the contract and that he would be investigating them? Anyone know what's happened?

They operate on their own soil, not everything that runs is a target(especially child)American patrol would have called a missile strike to wipe out the whole neighborhood.

And they would not be defusing bombs with water and wearing only kevlar vests protecting them too.

Thailand needs help from the professionals of eradicating the terrorist scums. Israel, for one has handled their terrorists well, might not be popular ,but for justice and effect.

Thai authorities have repeated on a number of occasions that they will not seek help from foreign governments for military/security assistance in the deep South.

Are you suggesting the Thai army ties muslim boys to the front of their vehicles as a human shield?
