I want to have certain things checked, my heart as I do suffer from palpitations so I am thinking a stress test and ECG, my chest as I have always had uncomfortable breathing(chest X-rays have always come back clear in the past(doc linked my breathing to possible stress, cholesterol, apart from these 2 things I feel very healthy, I exercise 2 hrs a day!

Of all the things to cheap-charley about, your health is not one of them. You can't pick and choose which tests you think you need. See a doctor and have him order the tests that he thinks you need, unless of course you are a doctor, and if so, you probably would not be thinking so foolishly

If you wan't to keep exercising 2 hours a day get a full work up since your symptoms could point to numerous disorders and you certainly don't want to live up to your nik

Why do people always refer to this cheap Charleyness at every opportunity! This has nothing to do with that, I asked a simple question to which simple advice would have been appreciated!! I will take a trip to the hospital and talk to a doctor to ease my concerns!

Can't advise on tests without knowing your age and prior medical and family history.

It will usually be cheaper to get a package than to pay for all tests individually, even if you have to add on some items and prefer to decline some items in the package. But you can sort that out when you get there.

Actually a package price might end up less than individual tests that a doctor recommends but you can see doctor first and have him check the math depending on what he recommends. The test programs will include consultation with a doctor in there price if you do not have a doctor or recommendation.

Thanks Sheryl, I am 57 there is no family history of heart disease, my mother died from a heart attack but she was a very heavy smoker all her life, she passed away at 83, my father passed away but had nothing to do with heart disease, he did have a stent in one of his arteries again he was a very heavy smoker, I do not smoke, I do not drink, I exercise regularly, I have had checks here for my breathing(only chest X-ray and consultation, the doctor said it is stress related, my palpitations are better since taking up exercise but still present, they are annoying!! I am not after saving money as a previous poster hinted, I can afford any tests! Edited by dogpoo

Should have mentioned I stopped drinking 3 weeks ago, previously I was only a light drinker, exercise started 3 weeks ago, 1hour on the exercise bike, followed by 120 lengths at the swimming pool(1 hour)

The OP is on a winner with the new exercise regime as well as giving up alcohol and never having smoked. Next thing to focus on is the diet.

I reckon taking a medical at a private clinic such as Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej and the likes, the OP selects a mid-range examination, around 12,000 baht. Most of these places already have a 'bundle' of tests that cover what the OP needs, based on age group. The same suite of tests can also be requested at a local hospital for well less than half the price above.

For the +50 guys, check for diabetes, hypertension, PSA, cholesterol and liver function. There's a family '2 for 1' special at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya where 2 people can get tested for one fee through end of June. Good way to get your partner involved? For 5500 baht, 2 people can get the comprehensive tests and the OP can request the PSA as an add-on for his suite of tests.

At 57, should have:

CBC (complete blood count)

ALT, AST (liver enzymes)

creatinine

lipid panel: total, HDL and LDL cholesterol; triglycerides

fasting blood glucoes

stress test if you have not had one in the past say 3 years. An excellent measure of your cardiac fitness and will detect coronary

artery disease ion early stages.

Chest Xray

PSA

either 3 consecutive stool tests for occult blood or a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy (if none in the past few years)

You'll find plenty of packages that are more or less along these lines, the main difference being that in Thailand they tend to add on abdominal ultrasound and hepatitis panel, both because of a high incidence of cancer of the liver in Thailand, not necessary for you from what you state of your medical history.
