Is Your Connection Slow Today

The link status that ISPs like Loxinfo and True report on their webpages are the links to CAT itself, which usually function nearly all the time. However, that link is only a single hop in a series, and from CAT onwards, may fail at any time, without affecting the actual link from ISPs to CAT, but affecting the traffic as a whole. Therefore, you can have CAT's international link totally fail (pretty common) and Loxinfo's status show nothing wrong, and it would still be accurate. A test is only accurate for what it actually tests.

Gharknes,

did you ever find some correlation between how your traffic gets routed, and how this translates to acceptable or slow ping times?

Whenever I have such high ping times I do a tracert and my traffic always goes over the singtel servers.

Now strangely, only 50% of my regular accessed sites gets routed through singtel, the other half ends up straight in the States from the Cat servers without passing over Singapore, resulting in normal ping times (approx 250-300msec)

e.g Google will almost always go over Singapore, Yahoo never!

It almost seems that the Singtel link sometimes is a satellite link!...

I'm attaching a tracert from both google and yahoo, where you can clearly see one of them going through singapore, the other not.

I'm using loxinfo dial-up at the moment, so the 500 msec for both tracerts is normal, and the Singtel servers are performing normal right now. If they are bad, I see pings of over 2000 msec with google (over singtel) and the standard 500 msec with yahoo!

Now here on my dial up it's a bit strange, in the Yahoo example, the delay is clearly in the CAT-IIGservice server, in the google tracert the delay is with Singtel, while the Cat gateway shows no abnormal delays....

Certainly not easy troubleshooting these mystery Thai Internet connections !!!

I will retry a bit later when I'm back home on my Maxnet4life connection!

I use www.download.com to search for shareware and freeware.

The link for Neotrace is here. This program is not free, but gives you a free trial period.

Googling, I see that there is “NeoTrace Express” as freeware.

Many download sites for NeoTrace Express I found with Google do indeed not work. I finally found a German site from where to download it and installed it.

NeoTrace Express does not give the same screen display as shown in post #1 of this thread. It gives you a map and a list, as follows:

Another site mentions that NeoTrace Express has been discontinued. This perhaps explains why many download sites for it do not work anymore.

I downloaded NeoTrace Express today, installed in on two computers, both running under Windows XP, and it works without problem on both computers.

The downloaded file is NTX325.exe. The program installation puts this icon on the desktop:

post-21260-1142720454.gif

I double click on that icon and this window opens:

I click on “Cancel” and this window opens:

I enter a URL, for example www.thaivisa.com, click on “Trace”, and this window opens:

I click on “List” and this window opens:
