Do Expats Use P2P? V P N? If Blocked, Then What Can You?

Featured Replies

I have heard that some of you may be using P2P file transfer software to upload and download files, and this is how the world should work, ideally unencombered. Throughout my life, I have never had my isp or anyone block my internet to limit file transfer.

So my question is this:

If anyone is actually using such a thing called bittorrent software, or amule, or emule, then what is one to do if one is behind a firewall at a company, or an institution, where popular ports may be closed on a whim, and very few IT drones are willing to extend a sympathetic ear?

I mean, I had thought there were solutions for everything, such as VPN and port forwarding that could tunnel traffic through any hurdles if only one could connect with the outside world.

Are there any good tried and true solutions someone could discuss here?

The idea would be to connect to P2P servers somewhere out there, reliably.

Of course one would expect to pay for a VPN service, but how does one actually set one up for P2P when proxy servers don't seem to work because some select local ports are blocked? And how does one choose a VPN which is reliable and can be tested, hopefully before payment is made?

All good advice Welcome!

ASAP

(We might assume this is just a thought experiment.)

if p2p is just all you need, you dont need a vpn, dedicated proxy etc etc

just get a seedbox

Seedbox? Yes, good idea. But which company? Sometimes these guys are fly by night and they abscond with the dough, or do not deliver after being paid.

when was your last hosting with a seedbox to get that impression? ironically seedbox hosters are talking about how paypal are protecting dumb subscribers.

there are so many reliable seedbox available, just google out the seedbox reviews and choose one according to your needs

im a long timer on seedstuff.ca dedicated line. but they are full on server the last time i check.

Actually, the last time was about 3 days ago that I paid first month to a company called seedboxhosting. Money was received by the company according to automated confirmation email. But other than confirmation of payment, nothing else has been forthcoming. Follow up emails to further identify this black hole go unanswered.

So in this case I must agree with you, just another dumb subscriber.

But what is the alternative if your computer is behind a company institution firewall where torrent software does not work as is?

Is there no good way to get something up and running in a hurry to torrent up and down some legit software, as well as other files?

Any help, will be appreciated.

Have you tried logging in to your account with them to see what is there?

In good conscience, I am happy to report back that seeboxhosting just shipped a seedbox server which I am now using. 3 days wait? Seems slow as molasses, but I will try to report back when I know how things are progressing 'downwards'.

Meanwhile, other than a seedbox which seems a foolproof solution, are there any thoughts about possible alternatives for those who do not wish to commit to a dedicated server, or even half a server? Many of the universities all over have their networks locked up tighter than a drum it seems.

Thank you for the input.

And, Ecky Thump, yes, I did try logging in to this company many times and was always given a message stating I had "no server". The company must have just gotten the server on-line within the past hour, or so.

Further Update to Seedboxhosting problem: This is NOT an ad. I still think these guys are slow off the mark. But once they get going, not too bad.

To test, I tried downloading a DVD of OpenSuse 12.3 (4.4GBytes of software)

Speed down was about 10,500 kBytes/s

Not exactly molasses.

I just wish Seedboxhosting would be more prompt in answering their emails.

We all enjoy a happy ending.

Try seed.st or kimsufi or xirvik.com

I saw these peers when I download torrent from private torrent site and my download speed from them (I use dedicated windows server) was pretty good.

If your computer is behind a company firewall then it's either not your computer or not your network infrastructure.

I use utorrent and set the port to random on each start up. The port might be/get blocked but it always works the next time I restart torrent.

If your computer is behind a company firewall then it's either not your computer or not your network infrastructure.

And in most companies you would be subject to dismissal for breaching the IT policy and puting the company at risk.

Oh, wait!

I get it!

I just Googled it.

That's pretty good. Sorry, I'm new here.

Without trying to sound superior, torrents are for noobs. Usenet is what the cools kids use. The superior cool kids.

Please feel free to sound superior. I don't think I have really used Usenet much since about 1992 or '93 (not 1893). But maybe we are speaking of two different networks.

When I go to download software from a linux website, I don't think I have ever seen one that offers to upload gigabytes via Usenet. Next time I'll ask.

Thank you.
