Riots against American digital nomads in Mexico City
I'm not sure they understand it, but they're really protesting venture capital buying up homes to put on the tourism rental market. That's driving up housing costs all over the world. Some places, worse than others. And it's been supercharged since "work at home" became mainstream during Covid. The housing prices in our little former fishing community on Galveston Island went through the roof because Houston people now only have to make the hour ++ (miserable, and sometimes several hours on a bad day) commute a few times a month. Add that to all the AirBNB conversions and it's no longer affordable for most families like it was just a few years ago. Looks like Mexico City is seeing the same phenomena with remote workers. The AP article even singles out AirBNB. -
