mangoman007
I generally like those guys and use them often. However, there is one M.taxi on our soi who's bike is REALLY LOUD, I think he has removed or replaced the muffler. Drive us nuts. Anyone control these guys? Is there a "foreman"? The BMA? Travel2003
Interesting title. I thought about this myself many times. I know it costs a lot to "buy" a shirt in order to be able to use that stand. And God help you if you have another color and try to pick anyone up from their territory. Have a feeling it is some sort of democracy within. Surely someone can explain hot they are organized. Regarding the noise. Probably a lost cause.
kblaze
Yes, every motorcycle taxi stand has a head guy. Ive actually always been fascinated with the motorcycle taxis, since Ive taken one or more almost everyday for 5+ years. Especially the unwritten rules they seem to have regarding seniority (some older guys pass off customers who are going somewhere they dont want to go to the younger moto taxi guys) and encroaching on other taxi stands territory. Oftentimes the moto taxi guys seem to serve as like watchmen over their turf, helping locals move things, watching out for crime, giving directions, etc. I feel safer with them around than a cop. But of course there are crazy ones and some that start drinking halfway through their "shift"

And you are right - they are the guys who seem to sort out things in their area and if you want anything sorted or any help they are some of the best people to stay friendly with. My kids seem to know them all around here and i feel they are much safer with them looking out for them than the cops as there are some "social problems" around and the moto cycle guys (and there are some women too around here) will know what is going on and who to trust. For the most part they are ok guys unless you cross them.

For the most part they are ok guys unless you cross them. Agreed, a motley crew for sure, but generally friendly and efficient. Ive never had any accidents using them daily for the past 5 years and I really like the brotherly, sometimes border-line gay, way they play around with each other to pass the time. Walking through the group that is nestled around the front of the supercar dealership on the right side of thong lo as you come from sukh you have to duck as they are constantly wrestling, tickling and chasing each other all over the place. I see their family members hanging out there all the time too, like doing homework n shit lol Another aspect of the motorcycle taxi culture that im particularly interested in is the chess/checkers players. Its such a prevalent thing among the taxi stands that I imagine there has to be like some kind of hierarchy or "superstar" players. You think they gamble on it? haha.. Ive always wanted to sponsor a chess and checkers lumpini park competition. Like a 3000 baht first prize. Have 6-10 local motorcycle stands send their top two chess and checkers players and set up a little tourney. I think it would be hilarious and fun to watch them duke it out. The orange vest guys vs the purple vests, etc..It would also be good if you need to apply for perm residency right? Shows you contributed and is a way of repaying the way they help you too Edited April 26, 2013 by kblaze

Sometimes bringing them some roast bugs and twigs for their breakfast. The road outside my house is perfect. Khun Watchaporn
Some people are positive in Thailand and some are negative. Be positive and positivity will come back to you. For example I bring 3 liter bottles of Black Label to the immigration office with a bunch of flowers, enter and shuffle around on my knees, and only have to pay 12,000 in donations as opposed to 20,000. You should put some positivity out there Candypants.

simple1
RTP are the ones who agree to establishing a motorbike "queue". OP would need to contact the local police to raise a complaint or contact the queue representative who liaises with the police. Khun Watchaporn
Farangs complaining about Thais and telling them what to do.... the locals do like that. I suspect the outcome would be all the taxi guys changing to much louder pipes and then spending their time out the farang's condo revving up. Kind of what a group of six year old's might do. candypants
to answer the question, in bangkok bma seized control of all motorcycl taxis some years back and implemented the universal orange binny. previous to that, the spoils and control fell to "influential" local families, each with its own colours , hence the territory disputes. It was much easier to spot a rider from another outfit. while the families exert some influnce in the capital still, they do not exert nearly as much as they used to. Travel2003
People who has been to Thailand more than just bar hopping, know one thing for a fact. The Thais could not care less if you complain about something so trivial as noise. Get on with your life is the attitude here. No way in hell will the general public here start doing something extraordinary in order just to annoy someone else. They are too (not lazy) laid back to do that, when there are so many other things one can use the energy to. Agree: The words 'clueless' and 'expert' spring to mind.
