Greetings Friends,

If anyone has information which would guide in a good way regarding the following it would extremely appreciated.

I am currently in Thailand and my passport expires on Jan. 2014. I have a one year business visa which allows me to stay in country for three months. Every three months, I do a visa run.

My next three month renewal is Aug. 7. At that time I will have less than 6 months on my passport and I am required to have at least six months for it to be stamped again. In this case, I would have five months.

I intend to have get a new passport at the US embassy asap. My concern is that the business visa is on the 'old' passport.

I was told to just bring both passports for the next run and that would be sufficient for the next three month stamp.

Does anyone know if this is true or not as I would like a second opinion to be very sure. Would there be complications with two passports? Has anyone had this situation? Or, if anyone knows some other information or special tips, that would be very much appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance.

Best regards,

Siri.

Getting a new passport at the Embassy is very easy. It takes about 10 days and costs $110. Make sure that you make an appointment on line.

When you get your new passport you will also get a letter stating that your old passport his being replaced with the new one, different passport number, and the old one has been cancelled. You take both passports and the letter to immigration and they will transfer the information from the old passport to the new one. They will only transfer your last permission to stay stamp, not the visa. Visas are not transferred to the new passport. You will have to carry both passports until the visa expires. It will remain valid in the old passport. The US embassy will stamp the bio page "cancelled" and deface the front and back cover of the old passport, but they won't deface the visa and you can use it until it expires.

When you do your visa run all stamps will be made in the new passport, but you will have to show the valid visa in the old passport when you re-enter and put the visa number on your arrival card. Make sure that you check the permission to stay stamp BEFORE you leave immigration to insure that they give you the 90 days that you an entitled to, they do make mistakes!

No you do not visit immigration for change of passport anymore if on a visa entry - only if on extensions of stay is this required. He does as he had been told - present both passports at exit point and it will be taken care of there and to use visa he will present both passports again and get the permitted to stay stamp in the new passport. Very simple.

FYI Thailand does not require six month validity for entry - only for the permitted to stay period - but many other countries do require this so you do need to change passport to make normal border runs.

Thank you very much for your information. I have made the appointment online. I also have the supporting documents for the new passport.

It is good to know I can still keep the old passport.

It is stated I should have the required form filled out prior to arrival at

the embassy. The form I see available is DS-82, but it is questionable

as it states that if I am out of country I should use a different one

(but there isn't another one to be seen). Are you familiar with this one?

Best regards, Siri

It is fantastic to hear I don't need to go to immigration. Yes. This is the information I had been told. I appreciate this confirmation. Many thanks for your help. It is relieving. Best regards, Tara.

You complete form DS-82 on-line and then print it to provide to Embassy - you do not check/pay for expedited service near the end of application as Embassy takes care of the submission. Below is the link to fill out and print (you can also print and do by hand but no reason for that).

NB

I had the details of Multi entry O visa entered in my new passport at Mae Sai where they seemd completely used to the procedure no questions asked just typed away and then handwrote details in New passport.

Very efficiient about 5 mins

However it did take up around half a page so that my new passport is already third full after barely a year luckily Americans can have pages added.

Good luck a small price to pay for the joys of living here.

The details is not a visa and can not be used for entry - to use a valid visa you will have to present the passport it is actually in and the original visa - you are then stamped in the new passport for stay.
